Saxophone

3/8 Phaya Thai Rd., 02-245-3592. BTS Victory Monument. www.saxophonepub.com Open daily 6pm-1:30am
Just two years younger than Brown Sugar, Saxophone is Bangkok’s other jazz institution. Big names like Koh Mr. Saxman (every Mon), or reggae group T-Bone (every Fri) make regular appearances but talented young musicians like the Rhythm Nation Band also get to share the stage.

Brown Sugar

469 Prasumen Rd. 087-112-7774. www.facebook.com/brownsugar.bkk Open daily 6pm-1am
Bangkok’s original venue for blues and jazz music, Brown Sugar recently moved from Sarasin to Prasumen Road. Live music is still on offer daily with regular appearances by veterans like Chai Blues and younger faces like Mellow Motif. International acts like Dira Sugandi, Valtinho Anastacio and Lewis Pragasam also drop by now and then.

Jazz Happen Bar

62 Phra Arthit Rd., 02-282-9934, 084-450-0505. Open daily from 7pm-12:30am.
Apart from the view of Phra Sumen fort and the retro charm of Phra Arthit Road, this bar serves up quality jazz, most of it delivered by the professors and students from the Faculty of Jazz at Silapakorn University.

Fat Gut’z

1/F, Grass, 264 Thong Lor Soi 12, 02-714-9832. Open 6pm-2am
While not blessed with a lot of space, this 50s speakeasy-inspired hole-in-the-wall still manages to squeeze in a band which plays bluesy numbers well into the night. Come early as the place gets packed fast during the weekends. While you’re there, don’t forget to sample their specialty fish and chips, which are among the best in town.

Nothing but the Blues

141 Thong Lor Soi 13, Sukhumvit Rd., 084-033-5228. Open Tue-Sun 7pm-midnight
The youngest blues and jazz spot in town, Nothing but the Blues, is like a younger Brown Sugar—and it’s right in the middle of Soi Thonglor. Owned by a group of jazz musicians, the bar is not only their own personal stage, it’s also open for jam sessions every last Sunday of the month.

Bangkok's Chao Phraya River is heating up, with a swarm of developments sprouting from its banks.

The Venice of the East has all but turned its back on the river. While it was once unthinkable to develop a hotel anywhere other than on the Chao Phraya, the past couple of decades have seen hoteliers favor Silom, Sukhumvit and Siam, while standalone ventures have flocked to hipster enclaves like Ari and Thong Lor. Even more recently, the suburbs seemed to be on the rise, with far-flung openings like Chocolate Ville and Mega Bangna pulling in the crowds. But now we’re seeing a surge of exciting projects on the banks of the river, either new, about to open or slated to open in the next few years. Could this be a renaissance for the River of Kings? Here’s what we have to look forward to.

The Siam

Hotel, Opening June 2012

This deluxe hotel, comprised of just 38 villas and suites and one exclusive cottage, is set to be one of Bangkok’s most luxurious when it opens this June. With rates from B16,000-B46,500, the sophisticated design comes courtesy of celebrated designer Bill Bensley (Indigo Pearl Phuket). While the antiques come from the owners’ personal collection, as the Sukosol family (Siam City Hotel), and particularly celebrity Krissada Sukosol Clapp, have a keen interest in Thai art. There will be four dining spots. The most awaited is Chon, which will be set in a traditional Thai house formerly owned by Jim Thompson before it was moved to its present location.
3/2 Khao Rd., 02-206-6999. www.thesiamhotel.com

Riva Surya

Hotel, Opening June 2012

Phra Athit Road, the historic and touristy riverside hot spot, will soon welcome a new venture by the Chao Phraya Express Boat Company people. The Riva Surya’s six-story hotel holds 68 rooms, with rates set to start from B3,300. Making generous use of dark woods, it mixes retro and contemporary touches for an updated “colonial” vibe. For us locals, try the bistro bar Bubble & Rum, which acts as both a garden tearoom during the day and serves basic dishes from steak to pad Thai at night.
23 Phra Arthit Rd., 02-633-5000. www.rivasurya.com

Sala Arun

Hotel, opening 2012

This is the bed and breakfast sister of Arun Residence, so you can expect the same kind of simple, old-school decoration with plenty of wood, old framed photographs and brass fans—plus a stunning view of Wat Arun on the opposite bank. We love how every room has a small balcony space for you to get closer to the river and read your morning paper while overlooking the Temple of Dawn.
47-49 Soi Ta Tien, Phraborommaharajchawang, 02-622-2932. www.salaarun.com

Int-Intersection

Hotel, Opening May 2012

Located near the river, Int is a 4-rai community mall operated by a member of the Inthraphuvasak family (importers of luxury cars, such as Porsche). Opening this month, its boasts 6,000 sq meters of retail space crammed with 37 stores and restaurants like Pancake Café, After You, True Coffee and a second branch of famed grilled duck eatery Prajak.
Between Rama 3 Sois 38 and 40, 02-369-3610. www.int-intersect.com

Bangkok Tree House

Hotel, Opening Feb 2012

This hotel may be on the Chao Phraya, but it is a long way downstream, in Bang Krajao (technically in Samut Prakarn). Unlike The Old Bangkok Inn (www.oldbangkokinn.com), the owner’s other property which celebrates the city’s heritage, Bangkok Tree House (www.bangkoktreehouse.com) is a cluster of three-story suites in very green surroundings. Its clean-cut architecture combines mineral (metal, glass and lots of mirrors) and organic (wood and bamboo) materials to perfection. Ideal for a staycation, we recommend you book a spot on the rooftop deck of its Reflect restaurant, where you can sit on bean bags and order a high tea set while you enjoy the view. Suites are B6,000, inclusive of breakfast, Wi-Fi internet, free ice-cream and bike rentals.
60 San Phawut Soi 23, Phra Pradaeng, 02-995-1150. www.bangkoktreehouse.com

Tha Maharaj

Shoppping, Opening 2013

The Chao Phraya Express Boat Company—yes them again—will start work on this project in August. Located on a two-rai plot by the river (on Maharaj Road, where a branch of S&P currently stands), this community mall aims to relocate the amulet sellers on the surrounding streets to new air-con digs, complete with an exhibition space. The remaining 50 percent of the area will host cafés and restaurants. The mall intends to focus on life on the river, with regular departures of tour boats and dinner cruises. The designs will be created by Contour Company, who previously did J Avenue and Rainhill.
78/24-29 Maharaj Rd., 02-623-6001-3

Asiatique

Hotel, Residential, Shopping, Opening Now - 2022

Phase one of Chang Beer’s Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi’s 70-rai super project on Charoenkrung Road is now open. The themed retail riverfront area, dubbed Asiatique The Riverfront, occupies 28 rai, with the remaining 42 rai set to be developed as hotels, condos and more retail space over the next 5-10 years. The new mall is themed according to the city’s architecture of old and is divided into several sections: the Charoenkrung District counts over 1,000 boutiques not unlike the old Suan Lum Night Bazaar; the Town Square combines Eastern and Western culture with a variety of eateries like Dib Dib (from Pla Dib), Checkmate, Capri and Kacha Kacha; an outdoor activity square, the Factory District, is set in a 100 year-old refurbished sawmill with over 500 fashion stores; and, finally, the Waterfront highlights the unique setting, with international restaurants, wine bars and panoramic views of the Chao Phraya. The gigantic venue is also home to five stages which will welcome extravagant shows from cabaret girls and the award-winning Joe Louis puppet theater to the famous transgender extravaganza by Calypso Bangkok.
2194 Charoenkrung Rd., 02-108-4488. www.thaiasiatique.com. Shuttle boat from BTS Saphan Taksin leaves the pier every 15 minutes.

Sena Fest

Shopping, Opening Late2012

Developed by the Sena Development Company, this B500 million project is not by the river but it is within spitting distance, on Charoennakorn Road. It’s another community mall, with 100 shops spread over four stories and featuring all the usual suspects: Villa Market, iStudio, Starbucks. A range of restaurants will occupy at least 50% of the space.
540 Charoennakorn Rd., 02-863-6181-2. www.senafest.com

The Canali

Residential, Shopping, Unconfirmed

The Canali is being launched by first-time developer, Charcoal, so it might take a while for such a bold project to take off. Renderings show crystal clear canals running through a community mall with giant terraces suspended above it all, offering sweeping views of the Chao Phraya. The project is slated to combine serviced apartments and a condo alongside the retail space.
Rama 3 Rd. www.thecanali.com

Landmark Waterfront Project

Hotel, Opening Early 2014

The privately-listed Country Group Development Plc (CGD) is new but its first project is nothing if not ambitious. With a B12 billion (US$396.8 million) budget, this 36-rai riverside development will include the Capella Hotel (101 rooms), Capella Residences Condominium (352 units), and the Jumeirah Hotel (305 rooms). The land was formerly occupied by the Fish Marketing Organization, on Charoenkrung Road, and will be leased from the Crown Property Bureau for 75 years.

Grand River Place, Grand River Park and Grand River Front

Residential, Shopping, Opening June 2012

Siam Piwat (Siam Centre, Siam Discovery), CP Group, and Magnolia Quality Development have just joined forces to develop a B35 billion, 40-rai mixed-use project in Charoennakorn on the Thonburi side of the river. Siam Piwat, the operator of Siam Center, will own a 50% stake in the venture, while CP and Magnolia will own 25% each (but the latter is actually owned by Tipaporn Chearavanont, the youngest daughter of Dhanin Chearavanont, who is CP Group chairman). While details have yet to be finalized, you can expect a retail plaza and residential condos. Work is set to begin early 2013. The Bangkok Post quoted Ms. Tipaporn as saying, “We want to create a physical and emotional landmark, something that can really enhance Bangkok’s status in the region and the world. An iconic landmark on the river can move the city forward like Paris, London and Shanghai.”
Charoennakorn Rd., across from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

Lumpini Park Riverside-Rama 3

Residential, Opening End of 2015

Although not renowned for being particularly fashionable, Lumpini Development Group has shown itself hip to the riverside trend. Its condo project there comprises four 36-story towers and is more than 70% complete. Prices start from B1,290,000 with rooms ranging from 26-105 square meters. Expect a private garden right on the river’s edge, topped off with a pier for easy access to water transport.

Health food stores in Singapore that make guilt-free eating easy.

Most bad habits are borne through laziness. The fact that the pub is closer than the gym, that the canteen sells crisps, not carrots. But with a little advance prep, you can make sure that when snacktime hits you’ve the right foodstuffs to hand. Stock up at any of these wholesome outlets and you can eat to your heart’s content (well, almost).

Brown Rice Paradise
It all starts with your staples. Like the name suggests, expect gluten/wheat/dairy-free products and organic food, and of course, all kinds of brown and otherwise exotic rice (Origin’s organic wild rice blend goes for $8.90 per kilo).

Eat Organic
Two levels of pure unadulterated goodness—there’s no way you’ll be leaving empty-handed. Think dark chocolate chewy granola bars ($9.90), rocky road bars ($3) and more. Their range of organic chocolate bars alone is worth the trip. Our personal picks? Green & Black’s dark chocolate 85% ($6.50) and Loving Earth’s crunchy mint raw dark chocolate ($11.50)—buy in bulk is our advice.

Four Seasons Organic Market
Organic rice. Organic noodles. Organic salt. You got it; it’s all organic, baby. One of the largest health food chains in town is home to certified organic brands like Yes Natural, Sunview and Organic Harvest. They also stock a kickass range of healthy snacks: organic rice chips ($3.40), organic brown rice rings ($2.10) and organic corn cakes ($3.50). They’re tastier than they sound, we promise.

SunnyChoice
With over 2,000 items in-store ranging from freshly-baked organic bread (from $5) to organic meat (from $35 per kilo), this is the kind of neighborhood grocer we all might wish for. You can even enjoy a cuppa at their cozy 30-seater café once the shopping’s out of the way.

SuperNature
Start the day right by loading up on tasty treats like Doves Farm cereal flakes ($11 for 375g) or McCann’s quick and easy steel-cut Irish oatmeal ($9 for 454g) if you’re pressed for time. Delivery is also available for the busy (or lazy)—a variety of farm boxes (from $70) for fresh leafy produce and thirst quenchers.

What's up at the city's hippest hill?

Two years ago, it was best known for its girly bars. A year ago, for its new foodie arrivals. Now, Duxton Hill has come into its own with an eclectic mix not just of restaurants, but bars, bookstores, art spaces and retail outlets.

*NEW* 1. Le Petit Cancale
The focus here is firmly on crustaceans and bivalves. Try their signature Le Petit Cancale ($90), a platter of freshly shucked Fine de Claire n° 3 and Normandes n° 4 molluscs from Cancale, Brittany crab, clams, whelks, winkles, langoustines and shrimp, or spring for the even more epic Le Grand Cancale ($195).

2. Latteria Mozzarella Bar
Don’t miss fresh cheeses such as stracciatella sprinkled with bottarga ($20) and nodini with proscuitto ($22) at this mozzarella bar owned by the il Lido group. Mains like melt-of-the-bone lamb shanks ($35) round out the menu.

3. Wok & Barrel
Chef-owner Shen Tan’s modern Singaporean eatery offers nasi lemak sets (from $7.90) and specialties like beef rendang pizza ($13.90).

4. Buyan Russian Haute Cuisine & Caviar Bar
Throw back a selection of over 50 vodkas (from $13/shot) at their downstairs bar. They go great with bites like khachapuri ($10), Georgian goat cheese flatbread.

5. Praelum Wine Bistro
This modest space serves a rotating variety of wines—dispensed by two Enomatic machines—in three different sizes: 25ml, 75ml or 150ml. On tap are choices like the house red, a 2008 Château La Croix Figeac (from $2.50/25ml).

6. Flor Pâtisserie
Stop at this Japanese bakery/café for maple, blueberry and caramel cheese tarts ($3.20), as well as the yummy chestnut marron pie ($4.20).

7. Broadway Cafe
Chow down on wedges and onion rings (both $6.90) while enjoying a private movie screening (they have a large projection screen and have themed movie nights every so often) at this homely spot.

8. Littered with Books
This book store repositions its furniture weekly, so customers get a fresh browsing experience each time. Pick a corner—our favorite nook is among the travel and food tomes upstairs—and read away the afternoon.

9. Greens on Screens
This café-bar-indoor golfing center features a simulator with advanced technology and interactive graphics. It’s currently closed for renovation but is set to reopen in late June.

10. The Pigeonhole
Pick up preloved books (from $3) at this indie alcove. The multifaceted establishment also serves Highlander coffee (from $3.50), displays local art and hosts budding music acts.

11. La Maison Fatien
Dishing out traditional fare is this atmospheric brasserie decorated with French paraphernalia. Dig into pan-seared foie gras with caramelized apple-raisin glaze ($18) and duck confit ($28). Served alongside are vinos from their famed namesake winery Maison Fatien (from $80/bottle).

12. En Motion Dance School
Specializing in Latin dance lessons—think salsa, tango and bachata—this studio is a haven for happy-footed couples. Trial classes go for $10. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, the house also hosts hot and heavy social dance parties called Latin Nitez ($3-5).

13. Richard Koh Fine Art
Focused on contemporary Southeast Asian art, this gallery is currently displaying work by Filipino abstract artist Jay Ticar (from $8,000). They also represent local art collective Vertical Submarine (from $1,200) and art installation specialist Yeo Chee Kiong.

14. AV Galleria
At this audio visual equipment store, pick up high-end pieces such as Audio-Technica headsets (from $38) and iPod docks by brands such as a JBL and Harman Kardon (from $100). For a more immersive experience, they’ll even build you a custom home theater system (from $3,000).

Give yourself a taste of culture at its best with what Kuala Lumpur has to offer. Check out these five must-dos.

#1 EXPLORE BATU CAVES

Batu Caves is one of the city’s most distinctive geographical landmarks with its maze of awe-inspiring caves. Not to forget the gigantic golden statue of Hindu deity Murugan, that guards the 272 steps up to the main complex of caverns. Bring your best hiking shoes though as it’s certainly quite a climb. A plentiful bat population and a resident troop of monkeys mean there are plenty of natural wonders alongside the religious ones. But for a truly intense experience come for the annual Thaipusam, religious festival which sees around 1.5 million pilgrims descend on the caves, with many of them engaging in acts of devotion ranging from self flagellation to body piercing,

#2 ISLAMIC ART MUSEUM

This vast museum, surrounded by the beautiful Lake Gardens, houses over 7,000 artifacts. Aimed at presenting the very best work of the Islamic world, this museum covers everything from jewelry and armor to textiles and ceramics. Highlights include the large collection of Islamic manuscripts and one of the world’s largest scale models of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. Islamic Arts Museum, Jalan Lembah Perdana, 50480. Tel: 03-2274 2020 www.iamm.org.my

#3 CHECK OUT MAP@PUBLIKA

The most creative minds in Kuala Lumpur now have every reason to hang out in Solaris Dutamas. Reckoned to be the city’s hottest art district, the area is made up of exhibition venues, arty boutiques and also has a number of theatres where you can get your fix of comedy, drama and dance. Part of Publika mall it’s all organised and managed by MAP, the city’s newest arts and cultural platform for contemporary creative ideas. #4 HIT THE JAZZ SCENE

For a bit of a bebop, beatnik vibe then the number one destination in the city has to be No Black Tie! Already an institution in Kuala Lumpur, this chic bar is the city’s top spot for jazz, soul, poetry and whatever you want in terms of music and arts. The place to be seen for all that cultural jazz, do stop by for its menu of Japanese fusion food before you sit back, relax and enjoy the hip cat sounds.

#5 GET LOST IN BRICKFIELDS

Trust us, you will enjoy getting lost in Brickfields, or as the locals call it Little India. Rows upon rows of restaurants will greet you and alluring wafts of Indian spices permeate the air; so make sure to enjoy some banana leaf rice or your typical palak paneer. Once you’re fuelled up you can take a walkabout and check out the traditional stores selling all things Indian – clothing, colourful textiles and jewellery – all to a backdrop of Bollywood music blaring out from every corner. The best part? The wonderfully affordable prices.

Bar Bar Black Sheep

Great heartland joints offering Indian, Thai and Western food along with a full bar menu. East siders rejoice—they just opened a fourth outlet at 362 Tanjong Katong Road.

Broth

Broth, which stands for "Bar Restaurant On The Hill", got a four-star review on our last visit. Service here is discreet and understanding (quite an achievement when they choose not to charge for it). Try their chocolate fondant and sticky date pudding.

Casa Verde

Casa Verde has a good menu of salads, pastas, pizzas, mains and Asian dishes—and a very decent breakfast menu which it has quickly cultivated a following for.

Esquina

One of the rare places we've awarded a five-star review, Esquina offers superb Spanish food, with items like ox cheek oloroso and barbecued mackerel being our favorites, as well as Estrella Damm beers.

Extra Virgin Pizza

One of our favorite pizza places in Singapore does a mean spicy pepperoni, along with less common stuff like pistachio pesto with mozzarella and truffle oil-scented mushroom bianco.

Full Steam

Great if you're looking for a tasty, healthy meal to takeaway. They've got a variety of baskets for veggie, meat and even seafood lovers, as well as sweet treats (though we wouldn't call these desserts).

KUMO

The endearing dining concept of omakase is available at this cozy kaiseki place helmed by chef Hirohashi Nobuaki.

Nirvana Bistro Bar

A charming Chinatown shophouse space that serves light bites such as mozzarella cheese sticks, sandwiches, as well as a variety of cakes you can have for tea.

OChre Italian Restaurant

Not sure if they've still got the separate, colored menus here, but we enjoyed the smoked duck risotto, herb-and-almond crusted lamb chops and vongole e cozze when we last ate here.

Pho Stop

The focus here, of course, is the pho. Yes, there's chicken ($7.20), but we suggest the beef feast combo of brisket, sliced beef and beef balls ($8.90). They also offer prawn and chicken rolls with hoi sin peanut sauce, homemade fish cakes and pork chops with rice.

SALTA

Named after a region in Argentina, Salta is the epicurean meat lover's paradise. Most would cut to the chase and order the lomo (tenderloin), but if you're not quite so focused, try the six-course Argentine Experience set.

SPRING JuChunYuan

Really good food and value for money. It’s rare to find a restaurant that delivers on all fronts, and this is one of them.

It’s that time of the year when we put our opinions aside and let you do the talking. And you have! We received thousands of votes this year (the most ever) and here’s your pick on the best, coolest, most awesome individuals, venues, products and services this city has to offer. And the winners are... (drum roll please)

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Party/Festival of the Year
ZoukOut
There’s just no stopping the annual beach dance music festival, already in its 11th year, despite stiff competition from Laneway and Mosaic. More than 26,000 punters (another record year) made their way to Siloso Beach for a round of the latest dance sounds by Roger Sanchez, Armin Van Buuren and Ladytron, dancing their way through sunset till sunrise.

Best Concert Venue
Esplanade—Theatres on the Bay
This is where the likes of rocks stars Yeah Yeah Yeahs and avant-garde theater director Robert Wilson have held performances—proof that the Esplanade is the city’s most versatile concert venue. Its outdoor concourse area, a platform for local bands to jam at, gets an extra vote from us.

Best Exhibition or Arts Event
Dali—Mind of a Genius
Mind-boggling or mind-blowing? Readers reckoned that Catalan surrealist Salvador Dali’s debut solo exhibition at the ArtScience Museum featuring over 250 works including iconic pieces like Alice in Wonderland, Woman Aflame and the Mae West Lips Sofa belonged to the latter.

Best Museum
Singapore Art Museum / SAM at 8Q
SAM’s the man. One of the city’s oldest museums (it turns 16 this year) is also the most relevant, putting out annual blockbuster shows (2011’s massive video art exhibition in collaboration with Centre Pompidou) at its main wing, plus more contemporary exhibitions showcasing the works of emerging young local and Southeast Asian artists at sister gallery 8Q. We like.

Best Art Gallery
The Substation
The city’s original outsider art space finally gets the recognition it deserves. From confounding performance art pieces to works by emerging and interesting young artists and designers, regular experimental exhibitions held here keep it on the periphery. Not anymore.

Best Theater Company
W!ld Rice
Artistic director Ivan Heng and team have a knack for reworking classics into hip, energetic plays (the recent Romeo & Juliet) and brave, witty pieces that take subtle jibes at the government (Cooling Off Day), and for that they got your vote.

Artist(s) of the Year
:phunk Studio and Sean Lee
One is a four-piece design collective gaining further international recognition for their Pop Art-inspired silkscreened works, collaborating with legendary Jap artist Keiichi Tanaami for the last two years; the other a winner of the ICON de Martell Cordon Bleu award for his dark autobiographical photos which have been compared to the works of Cindy Sherman. Both are testaments to the sophisticated state of the local art scene today.

SHOPPING

Best Fashion Brand
Hansel
Fashionistas can’t get enough of local womenswear designer Jo Soh’s vintage-inspired creations that are a hit among tai tais and hip young things alike. Hansel was also a winner for Best Fashion Brand last year.

Best Indie Boutique
Blackmarket
Also a winner in the same category last year, proprietor Jasmine Tuan’s 1,500-sq. ft. boutique is still the go to place for edgy contemporary fashion, with its unpredictable mix of quirky menswear (brands like Evenodd) and funky accessories (Stone For Gold).

Best Bookstore
Kinokuniya
Although smaller indie book retailers like Books Actually and Littered with Books are fast gaining ground, readers still prefer staple giant Kinokuniya. Although the bookish certainly won’t find more variety under one roof. Prices are more competitive, too.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Best Gym
Fitness First
Singapore’s largest fitness chain has 11 outlets altogether, equipped with cycling and Mind & Body Studios, as well as indoor and outdoor pools. Our pick is their One George Street outlet, with a heated infinity pool and a breathtaking view of the city skyline.

Best Spa
Banyan Tree Spa
If what you desperately need is an escape, this tropical wellness destination is probably your best bet. Its majestic location means you get unrivaled views of the gorgeous cityscape, and facilities such as the heavenly double rain-mist room do their job of making you feel like royalty.

Best Yoga Studio
Pure Yoga
With an extensive variety of classes like Restorative Yoga and Ashtanga, not to mention over 100 classes per week, it’s no wonder they’ve garnered such a loyal following.

Best Gym Alternative
Wave House Sentosa
People from all over the world visit just to try their hand (and feet) at international sensation, the Flow Barrel. And once you get off, you can hit the bar for a couple of chilled beers. Who said working out has to be boring?

Best Pilates Studio
Sky Pilates
If you’re not into mat work, then give one of the city’s largest machine-based studios a go.

NIGHTLIFE

Nightspot of the Year
Zouk
The granddaddy of local club culture is still No.1 with weekly offerings of top-notch international acts (too many to name) that get clubbers all worked up on the dancefloors. Its growing stable of local in-house DJs and producers makes going down to the club anytime of the week a rewarding experience too.

Best Lounge Club
Velvet Underground
Following a $3 million revamp late last year, the luxe lounge club now comprises two distinctive areas: Velvet Underground-Dance is where punters can groove to some smooth house tunes, while the lounge has tables from $1,500 (only a dozen tables up for grabs each night) and coveted Warhol paintings for you to gawk at. How’s that for lounge-worthy?

Best Bar / Best Rooftop Bar

Ku Dé Ta
High cover charges aside, we love this Balinese import atop the Marina Bay Sands with its killer view, good cocktails and a smooth playlist. Explains why it won in both categories.

Best New Bar / Best Cocktail Bar

28 HongKong Street
Word’s out: 28 HongKong Street is the freshest new watering hole in town, nabbing two wins for Best New Bar and Best Cocktail Bar. Never mind that it was all hush hush when it first started operations, the cocktails here are potent stuff. Plus, they make some killer nibbles, all the better to pad your stomach with.

Best Live Music Venue

Timbre @ The Substation
Owners Danny Loong and Edward Chia keep the local live music scene rocking with daily live performances by bands such as 53A and Goodfellas.

Best Microbrewery
Brewerkz
Marking its 15th anniversary this year, there’s still no beating Brewerkz when it comes to microbreweries, with recent innovations like a beer brewed with red sticky rice following an ancient Chinese recipe (who would have thought?). Various locations.

Best Wine Bar
Wine Connection
Affordable wines. Check. Great outdoor space. Check. This household wine bar and retailer is the go-to place for quality wines with locations at Cuppage Terrace and Robertson Walk, with a new concept at Robertson Walk added late last year that is already packing them in. Various locations.

Dining

Best Restaurant
Les Amis
After all this time, still one of the best damn restaurants in the city. The ambiance is lovely, the wait staff seriously know their stuff, there’s a remarkably comprehensive wine menu and the French fare is nothing short of sublime.

Best New Restaurant
Fat Cow
A recent addition to join the steakhouse movement with a modern Japanese twist, this classy establishment is all about the beef—Wagyu, of course. If you can, score yourself a seat at the counter in front of the open concept kitchen—chatting with the chefs as they prep your food is half the fun. Mean cocktails, too.

Chef of the Year

Justin Quek—Sky on 57
Homegrown local boy Justin Quek’s returned to Singapore to helm Sky on 57, featuring scrumptious Asian- and Singapore-inspired dishes, as well as a dazzling view. Looks like you folks are fans, giving Quek the title over several other very worthy local celeb chefs.

Best Brunch

Wild Honey
This all-day breakfast spot has some loyal fans, as is evident from the long line snaking around their entrance, particularly on weekends. In fact, they’ve been such a roaring success that they’ve recently opened a second outlet at Scotts Square (fortunately, this one actually takes reservations), although the homey rusticity of the original is hard to beat.

Best Coffee Joint
40 Hands
When this specialty coffee spot, founded by Perth native and barista Harry Grover, set up shop in Tiong Bahru, we really took notice; as did a steady stream of fellow caffeine addicts it seems.

Best Dessert Spot
2am:dessertbar
We’re pleased to report that chef-owner Janice Wong has really hit her stride at this dessert lounge, with innovative creations that often feature unusual ingredients that she incorporates in surprising ways. You’ve gotta love that they’re open till two in the morning (we sure do).

Best Hawker Center
Old Airport Road
It’s a bit of a trek to get out here, but it’s completely worth it for some of the best street food around. Most of the hawkers have been in the business for over 20 years. Translation: authentic, cheap and tasty grub. 51 Old Airport Rd.

TRAVEL

Asia Pacific’s Best Airline
Singapore Airlines
Yet again, the national carrier reigns supreme. Singapore Airlines remains the go-to for plushy spare-no-expense flying.

Best Budget Airline
Jetstar
With the most comprehensive choice of routes (29 and counting) including fresh additions such as Hanoi and Osaka, this inexpensive sibling to Qantas is your top pick

Best New Hotel
Mövenpick Heritage Hotel Sentosa
This five-star Sentosa Island getaway brings staycations to a whole new level. The interior blends colonial and contemporary influences, and their Onsen and Penthouse Suites feature outdoor Japanese-style hot tubs and private rooftop pools.

Best Boutique Hotel
Wanderlust
Singaporean hotelier Loh Lik Peng’s latest project hasn’t lost last year’s crown. Not only is this smartly designed space smack in the middle of the food bonanza that is Little India, it also boasts an excellent French restaurant, Cocotte.

Best Hotel
Fullerton Bay Hotel
Set above the smooth waters of Marina Bay, this hotel has it all, luxe décor (marble floors, walls upholstered in leather and stained glass mirrors), a rooftop bar with sweeping views of the bay, a rooftop gym, and Wi-Fi throughout.

Best Weekend Getaway
Bali
Winner for the second year running, Bali proves that this tropical island escape never loses it charm.

Heritage Initiative of the Year
We Support the Green Corridor
This initiative by the Nature Society Singapore aims to keep the now disused Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) Railway—connecting Singapore and Malaysia—and the surrounding land as a Green Corridor.

TECH

Coolest App
YourSingapore Guide
Some great features include the built-in maps—very pretty and fairly precise—and its ability to post on Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare. Plus it’s got most of the city covered.

Most Promising Startup
Gushcloud
A fun marketing platform that encourages people to share stuff they like in exchange for rewards from brands and businesses.

Best Blogger
Mr. Brown
Mr. Brown offers his take on the important things that happen in Singapore, unleashing his wit and sarcasm on people who just don’t get it. Take that.

Container

Founded in 2010 by three best friends, Container makes bags for everyday use that are both simple and timeless. Inspired by Japanese and Scandinavian architecture and interior design, Container looks to set itself apart from other brands through its focus on the finer details, like the stitching and lining. P’s Material

These hair accessories by Top Shop’s personal shopper and famous fashion blogger Ploy Chavaporn come in various colors and styles, from simple flowery circular bands to ones sporting gigantic lovebirds (from B950). Despite (or perhaps because of) the slightly expensive price tags, the accessories are popular among Thai stars and celebrities, so you might need to wait a while to own one. In the meantime you can read our interview with Ploy.

Paa*

Started four years ago as a small shop selling colorful shoes and bags, Paa* now has over 30,000 Facebook followers and is firmly established as one of the most popular local designers for accessories and girly fashion items. Its flagship outlet in Siam Square is packed with candy color shoes, bags and clothes for men and women but we must profess a particular soft spot for the vibrant doctor’s bags (pictured, B1,750) in their new summer collection. The Sleeveless Garden

It all started when three friends having trouble finding a perfect vintage-style bag for an affordable price, decided to take matters into their own hands. Their bags combine genuine leather with cool designs and fashionable colors—and prices starting from just B2,000. Highlights of their collections are the series of school bags in different colors, from tanned orange to vintage black. See our interview on page 11.

A Little 7

Animal-inspired modern accessories brand 77th has become a familiar name amongst devil-may-care fashionistas, leading to the birth of this prodigal son. A Little 7 retains the lively and adorable style of 77th, but thankfully carries a more affordable price tag. Designer Phongmanas Sawwadichai’s animal-themed necklaces and rings in faux gold and silver finish are softened with sweet preppy touches, and can be snapped up for under B2,000.

Aristotle

The accessory designer and the PR brain behind the success of Kloset, Toto Udthanun Hongmanee and Title Bhon Raksakulnit, decided to go it alone in 2008 with the creation of Aristotle. After three tough years, and with the support of Kloset’s owner Mallika Ruengkrittiya, their range of bags is now one of the hottest items in town. There’s a four-month waiting list for their super popular Rose Bag, and their new designs tend to sell out in just 15 minutes.

Colorscamp

Atthasorn Sriraksayothin—another accessory designer for Kloset who has ventured out, offers up this collection of candy-colored shoes, which he claims represent the fun and color of camping (we guess he must like camping more than us). The shoes (B2,850-3,450) are mainly made of canvas and sport pretty prints, from cool photographs to collaborations with local artists.

They’ve also started designing their own accessories, which have clearly been influenced by the owners’ love for all things vintage and unique. Don’t forget to check out the animal-inspired earrings (from B1,990) and limited edition Ray Bans.

Known for producing a minimalist range of stationery, bags and home décor items, its unique products have won several international design awards. Its new collection is no less impressive, featuring recycled leather and a quirky design that imitates the look (if not the feel) of paper bags. Prices are varied: from B149 for a mobile phone to B1,890 for a recycled-leather bag.
