Michel Gondry

Famed for his wicked sense of surrealism and eye for absurdity, veteran French filmmaker Michel Gondry is back with another romantic fantasy Mood Indigo. Starring Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris, the story is adapted from the 1920s novel L’Ecume des Jours (Froth on the Daydream) written by French author Boris Vian.

It seems romcoms are the order of the day among Thai studios as Five Stars Production are taking a break from their usual 3D horror flicks in favor of something lighter. Their new comedy sees the movie debuts of both leads, Akapan “Om” Namart and Jenny Wannigar, and, as the title suggests, features a strong dose of coffee in the story line. Akapan dreams of becoming a barista and having his own coffee shop but finds that life and relationship problems get in the way of achieving his goal. The movie has already completed post-production and is set to be released in cinemas on Oct 17.

Feel-good film company GTH just announced the story behind their latest romcom due out next year. Teacher’s Diary follows the love story between two teachers—Sukrit Wisetkaew aka Bee The Star and Ploy Cherman—set against the backdrop of academia. The movie will be directed by veteran director Nithiwat “Ton” Tharathorn, one of the six directors behind GTH’s smash hit Fan Chan (2003) and the director of popular romcoms Season Change (2006) and Dear Galileo (2009). Production has already started and the movie is set to hit Bangkok theatres by January next year.

Our roundup of the top daily gent’s products to ensure healthy happy faces.

Cleansing Gel

For all those men who wash their face with water and body soap, finding a good cleanser can make a world of difference. It’s not that soap isn’t adequate for your daily cleaning routine but its PH level is not designed for sensitive skin and can lead to dehydration on your face. Cleansing gels can also help specifically with oil and acne control.

Try:
Clinique Liquid face Wash (B850)
SK II Men Moisturizing Cleanser (B1,250)

Toner

Toners, alcohol-based or not, can help give you a deeper clean after using cleansing gel. Really, though, toner is only essential if you’re wearing makeup (as in foundation or powder) or if your daily routine involves a lot of contact with pollution.

Try:
Bioterm Aquapower Lotion (B1,700)
Sulwhasoo – Essential Skin Refiner (B1,900)

Moisturizer

Moisturizer is the number one product you really should own. It’s like treating your face to a big meal after a long day’s work. Moisturizer comes in both day and night creams, each with slightly different ingredients and textures. For day cream, look for the one with a light texture to keep your face bright while night cream can be a bit creamier and richer in ingredients for essential skin repair while you sleep.

Try:
Biotherm - Total Perfector Skin Optimizing Moisturizer (B2,200)
Sulwhasoo - Concentrated Renewing Cream (B1,800)

Eye Cream

The area under your eyes is generally considered the most sensitive, but wrinkles and dark circles are not all down to aging—lifestyle plays a part, too. So if you’re not getting your eight hours of beauty sleep, after applying your night moisturizer, we recommend dabbing on some specialist eye cream for a fresher look the next morning.

Try:
Eucerin Men Intense Anti-Age (B1,620)
Clinique All About Eyes (B1,500)

Sun Protection

Applying both a daily moisturizer and sun protection cream may sound like overkill but it can make a world of difference. To reduce the hassle, try finding a sun screen that contains enough moisturizer to act as a two-in-one. Don’t forget to apply dedicated moisturizer at night, though.

Try:
Biotherm – UV Defense (B1,900)
Lancome UV Expert GN-Shield SPF 50 PA +++ (B2,000)

Q&A

Komgrib Leelaake, physician

Do men really need skincare products?
Many skincare products remain cryptic in regards to their scientific effect. Those who need skincare are largely divided into two groups: people who have real skin problems and people who can spare to spend a little extra for their cosmetic needs.

What are the basics one should use on a daily basis?
Sunscreen, appropriate moisturizer and cleanser.

How do you choose each product?
For sunscreen, look for both SPF and PA on its label. If you’re addicted to outdoor sports, find a water-resistant one as well. Moisturizers should nourish your skin without leaving behind excess oil; for example, men with oily skin should look for only a light moisturizing cream or moisturizing gel. As for cleansers, it’s important to select one that won’t leave your face flaked after a wash. A non-fragrance cleanser is preferable, too.

What’s the perfect SPF level living in Bangkok?
SPF stands for sun protection factor, which basically tells you how long you can stay in the sun without burning from UVB light. You calculate this by taking the time you would normally burn in the sun without protection, say 30 minutes, and multiplying it by the SPF of your product. Without simplifying it too much, if you bought an SPF 50 sunscreen, it would approximately protect your skin for 1,500 minutes. However, you must also be aware that sweating is a big problem in Bangkok and can seriously reduce its longevity. SPF60+ is the safest call.

While some cosmetics brands are going with newer color correcting technologies, others believe the multi-functionality of beauty balm, or BB cream, is the answer. Here’s our roundup of the newly launched products you should try.

Bobbi Brown: BB Cream SPF 35

Price: B1,250

They said: Inspired by the hybrid makeup-skincare trend, the cream combines moisturizer treatment, SPF 35 and lightweight foundation.

We say: Bobbi Brown’s BB cream acts like tinted moisturizer—its main mission is to protect and mineralize your skin while also offering additional coverage and giving a luminizing effect. Quite rich in texture, you’ll need to apply it point by point before the product dries. Luminizes more than covers to give you a healthy natural look (should you be blessed with the skin for it).

MAC: Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm SPF 35

Price: B1,390

They said: A creamy beauty balm that primes the surface of your face ready for makeup. Offers everyday UVA/UVB SPF 35 defense. Available in nine shades.

We say: Quite creamy in texture but not difficult to apply. Compared to the others, MAC’s BB acts like a face primer, mineralizing your skin, with a tinted color to cover imperfections. Wearing alone with a touch of powder gives a daily natural look while you can also add foundation without it ending up looking caked-on.

Revlon: PhotoReady BB Cream

Price: B390

They said: Lightweight, multi-function cream that combines skincare with makeup and SPF 30.

We say: Revlon cosmetics is best known for their skin-preparation product line (i.e. foundation and concealers) for medium to high coverage that offers a smooth, mineralized finish. And the same applies to their newly launched BB cream. Light in texture, the cream is easy to apply but not oily. Even better, the product gives a coverage level that’s not far off that achieved by foundation.

L’Oreal: Lucent Magique Skin Illuminating BB Cream

Price: B399

They said: Brightens as well as corrects imperfections, with the added bonus of SPF 20, PA++. Incorporates Intuitive BB Capsules Technology with the use of skin-perfecting pigment.

We say: L’Oreal differs from others in that it’s more like a daily moisturizer as it doesn’t really provide coverage, but it does have natural color capsules that absorb into your skin when applied. It luminizes your skin but foundation is needed for a flawless finish.

Maybelline: Clear Smooth BB White SPF 50 PA++

Price: B249

They said: The multi-function cream moisturizes, covers and features whitening properties and SPF 50 PA++.

We say: Maybelline originally launched a stick version of the Clear Smooth BB, but we feel it works much better as a cream. The main functions—correcting imperfections and sun protection—remain much the same, but the cream is a lot easier to apply, offering a more natural finish and a higher level of oil control.

Ettusais: BB Mineral Liquid

Price: B750 (30ml)

They said: The product consists of smooth liquid oil and smooth matte powder. Formulated with 59% skin care ingredients including double-hyaluronic acid and UV-blocking SPF 35, PA++. Available in two shades: light and natural beige.

We say: While most BB creams act like foundation that you have to touch up with either loose powder or pressed powder, this one has a different, powdery texture that requires no touching up. This makes it very convenient for when you’re in a rush—the only problem is the relatively low coverage level and that additional applications can make your face look dehydrated.

BB versus CC

The difference between Beauty Balm cream and Color Corrections cream?
BB cream, or beauty balm, was invented by a Korean cosmetics brand as a hybrid product combining three daily essentials (moisturizer, foundation and sun protection) to respond to the increasingly hectic lifestyles of women. Newcomer CC cream, or color correcting cream, serves a similar multi-functional purpose only with an additional skin preparation focus, hence the reference to color correction. Basically, both products are considered part of the same line—which one you opt for depends on you and your skin condition. Our tip: test which one works best for you at the makeup counter.

Tang Wong

After ditching the big production studios to follow his art-house obsession last year with the internationally acclaimed P-047, veteran filmmaker Kongdej Jaturanrasamee returns with his second independent project, Tang Wong. The film, funded by the Office of Contemporary Art And Culture, broaches the ever-pertinent topic of superstition in Thai culture and premiered at the 63rd Berlin Film Festival before finally hitting Bangkok this month.

The recent MTV Video Music Awards showed that the current makeup trend is all about playing with your lips—here are our four picks to try this season.

Mysterious Red

Red lips are always hot. But instead of sticking to a bright shade, go one (or two) tones darker for a classier look.
Inspired by: Taylor Swift
Our pick: YSL: N.54 Prune Avenue, Nocturnal plum (B1,200)

The Gold

Gold and brown make for a softer look, but adding a shimmery texture will totally get you glamorous results.
Inspired by: Katy Perry
Our pick: MAC Smash Hit sheer golden sparkle (B810)

The Plum

Purple has been a common sight on eyelids for some time now. As for lips, the color is proving so hot on the catwalk that many brands are also launching their own shades of aubergine and magenta.
Inspired by: Selena Gomez
Our pick: Illamasqua New Lipstick in ESP (B850)

The Orange

Orange is certainly in the spotlight right now. Pick and play with a bright shade and match it with golden or black smokey-eyes. (Well, lips are hot, Miley’s twerking not so much)
Inspired by: Miley Cyrus
Our pick: NARS Red Square Velvet Matte lip pencil (B950)

Tips:

Before applying the lipstick: Apply the liquid foundation that you use on your face to your lips. This will create a neutral canvas on which to show 100% of the lipstick color.

After applying the lipstick: Touch up with tissue paper. This will help remove the oil from your lipstick, leaving only the color on your lips. Then you can apply the lipstick a second time for long-lasting wear.
