Our roundup of the top daily gent’s products to ensure healthy happy faces.

Cleansing Gel

For all those men who wash their face with water and body soap, finding a good cleanser can make a world of difference. It’s not that soap isn’t adequate for your daily cleaning routine but its PH level is not designed for sensitive skin and can lead to dehydration on your face. Cleansing gels can also help specifically with oil and acne control.

Try:
Clinique Liquid face Wash (B850)
SK II Men Moisturizing Cleanser (B1,250)

Toner

Toners, alcohol-based or not, can help give you a deeper clean after using cleansing gel. Really, though, toner is only essential if you’re wearing makeup (as in foundation or powder) or if your daily routine involves a lot of contact with pollution.

Try:
Bioterm Aquapower Lotion (B1,700)
Sulwhasoo – Essential Skin Refiner (B1,900)

Moisturizer

Moisturizer is the number one product you really should own. It’s like treating your face to a big meal after a long day’s work. Moisturizer comes in both day and night creams, each with slightly different ingredients and textures. For day cream, look for the one with a light texture to keep your face bright while night cream can be a bit creamier and richer in ingredients for essential skin repair while you sleep.

Try:
Biotherm - Total Perfector Skin Optimizing Moisturizer (B2,200)
Sulwhasoo - Concentrated Renewing Cream (B1,800)

Eye Cream

The area under your eyes is generally considered the most sensitive, but wrinkles and dark circles are not all down to aging—lifestyle plays a part, too. So if you’re not getting your eight hours of beauty sleep, after applying your night moisturizer, we recommend dabbing on some specialist eye cream for a fresher look the next morning.

Try:
Eucerin Men Intense Anti-Age (B1,620)
Clinique All About Eyes (B1,500)

Sun Protection

Applying both a daily moisturizer and sun protection cream may sound like overkill but it can make a world of difference. To reduce the hassle, try finding a sun screen that contains enough moisturizer to act as a two-in-one. Don’t forget to apply dedicated moisturizer at night, though.

Try:
Biotherm – UV Defense (B1,900)
Lancome UV Expert GN-Shield SPF 50 PA +++ (B2,000)

Q&A

Komgrib Leelaake, physician

Do men really need skincare products?
Many skincare products remain cryptic in regards to their scientific effect. Those who need skincare are largely divided into two groups: people who have real skin problems and people who can spare to spend a little extra for their cosmetic needs.

What are the basics one should use on a daily basis?
Sunscreen, appropriate moisturizer and cleanser.

How do you choose each product?
For sunscreen, look for both SPF and PA on its label. If you’re addicted to outdoor sports, find a water-resistant one as well. Moisturizers should nourish your skin without leaving behind excess oil; for example, men with oily skin should look for only a light moisturizing cream or moisturizing gel. As for cleansers, it’s important to select one that won’t leave your face flaked after a wash. A non-fragrance cleanser is preferable, too.

What’s the perfect SPF level living in Bangkok?
SPF stands for sun protection factor, which basically tells you how long you can stay in the sun without burning from UVB light. You calculate this by taking the time you would normally burn in the sun without protection, say 30 minutes, and multiplying it by the SPF of your product. Without simplifying it too much, if you bought an SPF 50 sunscreen, it would approximately protect your skin for 1,500 minutes. However, you must also be aware that sweating is a big problem in Bangkok and can seriously reduce its longevity. SPF60+ is the safest call.
