A world away from Macau’s fast-paced, high-stakes main drag, sleepy Coloane is a real hidden gem.

Connected to the better-known island of Taipa by the glitzy Cotai strip (where all the fights and the gambling take place) is Coloane, a one-time pirate outpost that still sees far fewer visitors than the rest of Macau. So far, give or take the odd go-kart track, this charming island (which is actually bigger than Taipa) has resisted the aggressive development happening elsewhere in the territory. You don’t really need more than a day to see the sights, but it’s well worth a detour from the main tourist circuit. Here are five ways to make the most of your time there.

1. Eat local

In Coloane, food is the order of the day—you’ll find great Macanese dishes (a fusion of Chinese and Portuguese cuisine), like the African chicken and lacassa soup. For some premium Macanese grub, Restaurante Fernando (9 Praia de Hac Sa, Coloane, +853 2888-2531, www.fernando-restaurant.com) stands out with its fine European style décor and fantastic location (at Hac Sa Beach). Alternatively, check out the numerous al fresco dining spots at Coloane Village for something a little cheaper. The highlight? Undoubtedly Lord Stow’s Bakery (1 Rua Da Tassara, Coloane Town Square, +853 2888-2534, www.lordstow.com), the original creator of the internationally famous Portuguese egg tarts.

2. Get on your feet

Coloane village is the kind of quiet colonial leftover that rewards patient exploration on foot, with cobbled streets leading you to historic treasures such as the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier, built in 1928, and Tam Kung Temple. After exploring the alleys, head towards the drive that overlooks the small sea passage separating Macau and China for a stunning view. And don’t forget to pay a visit to Coloane Pier, where old huts stand beside shops selling dried seafood—reminiscent of the town’s past as an active fishing village.

3. Live life to the fore

You may have played golf on plenty of other courses around the world but, we suspect, none quite like this one. The acclaimed Ocean Driving Range at the Macau Golf and Country Club (Estrada de Hac Sa, IIha de Coloane, +853 2887-1188, www.mgccmacau.com) lets you take a swing into the South China Sea, with caddies standing by on boats ready to fish out the balls. You’d better be on top of your game here—you’ll be asked to leave if you don’t meet the time limit or achieve a score of nine shots or less on the first hole.

4. Hit the beaches

Both the southern and eastern shores of Coloane boast better beaches than you’ll find anywhere else in Macau. Cheoc-Van in the south is more popular due to its golden sand, water activities (if you fancy jet-skiing or sailing) and safer swimming facilities, but the easterly, black sand Hac Sa is equally well-suited to a lazy afternoon before gearing up for a big night back in Macau proper.

5. Bed down

It’s a little run-down these days, but the 28-room Pousada de Coloane (“pousada” is Portuguese for inn or guesthouse) is wonderfully evocative of bygone glories. Think blue and white tiled walls, antique wooden furnishings, home-style Portuguese food and great views of Cheoc-Van beach from the breakfast terrace. Rooms start from around B8,170. Where to stay

While it’s definitely worth spending a night at Pousada de Colane, it’s not a great base for further exploration. Holiday Inn Sands Cotai Central (Senhora De Esperanzca S/N Taipa, Macau, www.ihg.com), right on the Cotai strip, with easy access to both peninsular Macau and Coloane, is as convenient as they come. Rooms start from B7,300.

Getting there

Direct flights with AirAsia (www.airasia.com) start from around B6,580 and take about three and a half hours.
Thai Airways (www.thaiairways.com) offers two direct flights daily from Bangkok to Macau with rates starting from about B8,550 for a roundtrip.

Building on the likes of Simple, Ceresia Coffee and What If, Sukhumvit’s sois 31 and 33 have fully confirmed their position as a hip hub with these new openings.

1. Potion Bar

The newest arrival at The Green Connect building, following cafes What If and Sweet Pista, Potion Bar puts its main focus on furniture and creative Thai-influenced cocktails. Here, the owners’ passions come to the fore: one partner runs an import wallpaper business, Pinpina, while another is a furniture designer for the brand Cast. The space has been set up as if it’s a furniture showroom, only with a bar installed, and you can actually buy the furniture to take home. The cocktails here are all made with a base of Thai liquor (Sangsom, Mae Khong and Ma-Jai-dum, to name a few) and infused with herbs and fruit like pandanus and pomegranate. Try Tarn, the simply named cocktail where pomegranate-infused liquor is blended with palm juice (B270). The soft opening period throws up a buy-one-cocktail-get-one-free-beer deal from now through Dec 19.

235/10 Sukhumvit Soi 31 (Soi Sawasdee). 091-868-9974. Showroom open daily 10am-onwards. Bar open daily 6pm-midnight.

2. Rana. Yoga

This standalone yoga studio moved from their original place on Sukhumvit Soi 39 to join The Green Connect community about three months ago. The tiny studio offers many types of yoga, from hatha and body balance to hot yoga and sun series, with classes limited to a maximum 15 students. The schedule is updated monthly on their Facebook page and no prior reservations are required, though they do recommend it for the Saturday morning classes or weekday ones from 6.45pm. Packages start from B3,500 for 10 visits (valid for three months) or B3,500 per month with unlimited classes.

3. Dot Art + Suite

Owned by graphic designer Kasom Deepraditkul, this three-story house first opened as a gallery showcasing the owners’ personal collection of wood carvings, ceramics, furniture and prints all three floor but also open space on the first floor for guest exhibitions. Things kicked off properly last month with Gun Sangkarakan’s Intimate Photography: Droplets on Lotus Leaves. Now, the second and third floor has been converted into a two-room boutique hotel, fully furnished with wood and leather furniture, in keeping with the owners’ showcase downstairs. Booking is available through airbnb.com with prices starting from B3,000 per night including breakfast.

4. Ocean Urban Lounge and Boutique Resort

Another hip spot for dinner and drinks has just popped up on Sukhumvit Soi 33. Ocean Urban Lounge and Boutique Resort goes for a beach-club-cum resort atmosphere, with eight rooms, one restaurant and a bar. The laidback Ocean Gastro Tapas bar serves up Mediterranean and Asian fusion courtesy of Chef Jacobo Astray. On the club side, the bar offers cocktails from mixologist Joseph Boroski and lets you choose between indoor and poolside seating. We were told the club will soon be expanded to the basement floor, too. Give the bar a try with any of their daily promotions, including Thursday Ladies’ Night offering free-flow sangria from 6-8pm and a complimentary medicure-pedicure by the pool.

5. Coffeas Coffee Lab & Pub

Counting down till their opening on Dec 11, Coffeas Coffee Lab & Pub is an extension of Coffeas, sister company of the Zutto retail brand, and is set to become yet another new addition to Sukhumvit’s serious coffee scene. Using beans sourced from Northern Thailand, the place will not only serve freshly brewed coffee, but try to set itself up as a real coffee lovers’ community with brewing workshops to share new products and techniques. Stay tuned for our full review in the following weeks.

What do you like most about your neighborhood?

“I am a big fan of the coffee cafes in my neighborhood. I am lucky enough to be close to Cherubin and Mousses & Meringue to get my weekly, if not daily, cake fix.”

Amornrat Sachdev, 23, counselor

“My favourite place on 31 is Appia. I like its casual and relaxed atmosphere, which makes it a great place to go with friends for a night out. The tasty rustic Italian food based, wide range of wines and divine desserts require repeated visits in order to try them all. I’m just thankful that The Lab fitness studio is only down the road to help burn off all those indulgent calories!”

Sneak out of your five-star hotel to explore the best spots around Cape Panwa.

Although located on the far southwestern tip of Phuket, Cape Panwa is one of the most popular destinations on the island, thanks to stellar high-end resorts like Sri Panwa. Despite being remote, Cape Panwa, which has also just welcomed the Regent Phuket Cape Panwa, does offer a few must-visit attractions, from beaches, islands, waterfalls and, of course, magnificent views, while still being only 15 minutes from the center of Phuket Town.

Beach hopping

The beaches at Cape Panwa are not ideal for swimming but are perfect for lazing about in the sun. The new hotel (see Grand Opening) has the most beautiful private beach of all the resorts in the area. White sands and idyllic blue water make this beach a great place to unwind. However, it is restricted to hotel guests. A little drive away is a beach called Ao Yon. This quiet beach is home to fishermen and a number of yachts. Local restaurants offer boat trips if you fancy a spot of fishing.

The Falls

Phuket is justifiably famous for its beaches, but waterfalls are another real attraction of the island. One nearby is Ao Yon Waterfall. Situated 10 minutues from Cape Panwa, the place is rather difficult to find, situated right where Soi Ruam Jai Ao Yon ends. It also takes a little trekking to reach the spot but it’s worth it for its strong water flow, especially during rainy season. Sit right next to the fall or dangle your legs in to get massaged by nature.

The Underworld

Sat at the tip of the cape is the Phuket Aquarium (51 Mu 8, Sakdidej Road, 076-391-051, www.phuketaquarium.org). Though quite old now, it still acts as a valuable education center exhibiting all kinds of seawater fish species, as well as doling out knowledge on how to protect the local ecosystem. On Saturday and Sunday you can dive with the fish and help feed them from 11-11:30am. Here, they also house turtles that have been rescued from the sea and are now looked after by the aquarium officials. The aquarium is located right on the beachside and has a natural trail with different kinds of sea plants on display. The Panwa beach next to it also has a great view from afternoon till sunset when colorful longtail boats dot the beach.

Top of the Cape

Khao Khad Views Tower is located slightly out of the way, in Wichit District on Skdidej Road past through Mudong Canal, and requires you to climb a few steps or take the natural wooden bridge trail to reach the top for a 360-degree view of south Phuket and its nearby islands. But it’s more than worth it. Chalong Bay, Makham Bay, Cape Panwa and, at a distance, the Big Buddha are all visible. The best time to go is afternoon until sunset, too.

Island Day Trips

Island-hopping is a great option for visitors here for a long stay. There are two islands close to Panwa. Coral Island or Koh Hae, three kilometers southeast of Phuket, has two beaches, Banana Beach and Long Beach, where you can view the impressive coral reef with a bit of snorkeling. The island is also great for doing water sports like kayaking. Leaving from the aquarium, day trips by longtail boat take approximately 45 minutes each way and include lunch and light snacks at B1,200 roundtrip (bargain hard). Some 12 kilometers south of Phuket lies Racha Island or Koh Raya, famous for diving and snorkeling. The clear waters and white sands see day-trippers flock here, with some even staying on in the bungalows and resorts that have begun to spring up. Day trips by speedboat take around 30 minutes each way and cost B1,600 roundtrip inclusive of lunch and light snacks.

The Local Taste

When evening falls, the best choice to catch the sunset while sipping a few refreshing cocktails is Sri Panwa’s Baba Nest, an exclusive rooftop bar with a panoramic view of Phuket’s southeastern islands. Another restaurant with a similarly impressive view is The Grill at the newly-opened Regent Phuket Cape Panwa. Its rooftop dining lounge boasts an impressive wine list to match the setting, too. Craving some local food? Head to the last turn of the cape where the welcoming Keang Lay (33/1  Mu 8, Sakdidej Road, 076-391-103, open daily 11:30am-10pm) serves up tasty local bites. Try the gaeng kati pu mee hun (spicy crab red curry with rice noodles, B150) served with beansprout, boiled eggs, pineapple and basil leaves, the stir-fried smoked dried shrimp with pak miang (melinjo nuts, B100) or minced fried pork or beef with dry curry (B120). Follow up your heavy dinner with a stroll along the Panwa beachside to Kantary Café (owned by Cape Panwa) for a few sweets. This cozy café does some of the best coffee in the area and serves a variety of cheesecakes. Try the coffee frappe (B75) with a fresh fruits cheesecake (B120) and sit by the window for the calming ocean breeze.
