7 fool-proof places to treat dad this Father's Day
It’s a holiday tomorrow, and here’s some great ways to spend it with dad.
Maybe not the most obvious choice for this list, but Arno's foray into the world of guay tiew and pad kaprao is very approachable, especially for older dads. That’s not a knock on the place, dining here feels just like eating at any shophouse restaurant, except with an added glass front to keep the air con in. The venue is split into two rooms, one for sitting and the other for showcasing raw meat in freezers. Go with the staples, guay tiew and pad kaprao, we tried both.
1721/5 Chan Kao Rd., 02-286-2635. Open daily 11am-8pm
Tucked away on top of their French restaurant, Brasserie Cordonnier, The Bar Upstairs brings a casual, fun wine bar vibe to Sukhumvit Soi 11. Like its downstairs neighbor, The Bar Upstairs offers French cuisine but it takes a more casual form. For those with a rumbling stomach, the croque monsieur (French sandwich) is sure to hit the spot. Our favorite dish from Brasserie Cordonnier has ventured upstairs and still remains unbeaten: the Burgundy snails with garlic, parsley and pastis butter, but the real highlight is the Chef’s Picnic Basket that's coupled with a Father's day promotion—offerring complimentary wine with every purchase (one glass per person for up to 4 people). If you are looking for something a little less traditional on Thai Father’s Day, this is your spot.

Chunky throws a brioche-shaped punch at Bangkok’s healthy-eating trend with a lineup of decadent burgers and much more. Those in-the-know get the Chunky’s Wife Burger with firey nahm prik orng (northern chilli dip) and bacon jam blended together. Here, around 90-percent of the ingredients are grown locally by villagers, like cheese sauce made with salted eggs from Chaiya and cured mackerel caesar sauce from Song Khla. The result is a line of East-meet-West burgers you’ll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. Bring your dad on Father's Day and get one free coconut ice cream (topped with raw egg and served on sugar doused bread).

This modern two-story wood house with backyard views is the brainchild of two Indian chefs, Deepanker Khosla and Tarun Bhatia, who are both zealots for the farm-to-table and zero-waste approach. Taste the new 13-course "Nature" menu (B2,590), featuring dishes like the melon terrine (melon in tom kha sorbet and caviar) and Haoma in a Bite (Haoma-raised fish, dashi and raisin jam), or go for the nine-course Nature menu (B1,990), including galauti cornets (wild mushrooms, citrus gel, spices and fresh truffles), prawns on the rocks (river prawns with peanuts, chili, tamarind and seaweed) and tikka masala (charbroiled chicken, cottage cheese, Makhani sorbet and pickles.)

While the high-end Cantonese restaurant in the hallowed halls of Rajpruek Golf Club welcomes no shortage of VIP visitors, this mall spin-off is altogether more casual. The kitchen is still a notch above, though, excelling in soy sauce-laden chee cheong fun with crispy shrimp (soft, springy rice-noodle exterior, crunchy center) and generous char siu buns packed with sweet-honey pork.

Nestled on the uber-posh Wireless Road, Sanguan Sri offers a refreshingly traditional, and not supremely expensive, take on Thai food—highlighted by the fact that it picked up a Bib Gourmand in the 2019 Michelin Guide, an honor designated for “Inspectors’ favorites for good value.” While the decor is simple and nothing to write home about, the food is, and why many of its customers have been coming here for several decades. Go with the green curry with beef, krapow moo or a glass of refreshing coconut juice.
59/1 Wireless Rd., 02-252-7637. Open Mon-Sat 10am-3pm
Surrounded by lush green gardens, and with interiors inspired by the man himself, Spirit Jim Thompson, combines authentic recipes with slick, modern presentation. Opt for the miang kham nam tan grob—a traditional snack that bursts with cashew nuts, ginger, coconut and tamarind glaze, all wrapped up in betel leaves—or the nutty panang curry with pork ribs and ground peanuts (B430). For dessert, try the med kanoon sam yang (B320), which comes with coconut cakes, jackfruit seeds and salty coconut cream.
