Ah Yat Abalone Forum

It’s not all just abalone and seafood at this longstanding Cantonese specialist. Headed by native Hong Kong chef Yeung Koon Yat (formerly of Hong Kong’s Forum Restaurant, which once held a Michelin star), this longtime favorite of many of Bangkok’s oldest Thai families also boasts some of the best dim sum in town, including the much-vaunted lava buns.

Bai Yun

Located on the 59th floor of Banyan Tree Bangkok, Bai Yun offers scenic city views to go with its Chinese delicacies. During lunchtime, you can sit back and savor on their dim sum buffet made using fresh and quality ingredients while for dinner, the city lights complement the kitchen's modern twists on classic Cantonese cuisine.

China House

China House charms diners who need a dash of hip to go with their shrimp dumplings. Set in a dining area that recalls Shanghai Tang-meets-1920s-China, this restaurant offers dyed-in-the-wool crowd pleasers like oven-roasted Peking duck, as well as nouveau-Chinois flourishes like deep-fried shrimp in a creamy wasabi sauce. For maximum exposure to China House’s kitchen, try out the weekend brunch.

Mandarin Oriental, 48 Oriental Ave., Charoenkrung Rd., 02-659-9000#7390

Din Tai Fung

A must-visit for Bangkok’s lovers of soup dumplings, this Taiwanese import is one of the most popular restaurants in CentralWorld. Queue up with friends and order a set of xiao long bao (soup-filled steamed dumplings), and a range of dishes to accompany them. Despite the large menu, the xiao long bao are the main event and arrive to your table in the same Chinese wooden basket used to steam them, still billowing smoke.

Hong Bao

You’ve probably already seen Hong Bao’s hypnotic orange swirled buns on your favorite social media platform. This lava salapao, a colorful bun filled with molten, salty duck egg yolk, may be the headline dish, but there’s no shortage of winners at the always packed Hong Bao. Reserve a table and bring the family for a dim sum feast, while keeping your eyes on the menu for specials and out-of-the ordinary fillings in the rolls and baos.

Sukhumvit Soi 39, 02-662-3565

Liu

As you might guess from the neo-classical decor, the Conrad Bangkok's gourmet Chinese restaurant aims to go beyond traditional dishes, boldly venturing into contemporary variations of Shanghainese, Sichuan and Cantonese cuisines. Case in point: Liu's signature "Dong Po Pork," stewed pork belly with black soy sauce served with Chinese buns. We particularly like the refined sets, which combine all you-can-eat dim sum with fresh seafood and succulent duck dishes.

Man Fu Yuan Kitchen

First established in Singapore before opening in Rajpruek Club on Vibhavadi Road, this high-end Cantonese restaurant has now branched out to Emquartier. Taking the space of the defunct Charm, Man Fu Yuan Kitchen aims at something a lot more casual than its full-on original branch. To match its mall setting, the kitchen dishes up casual items as well as all-day dim sum. Don’t miss the aromatic tea-smoked duck (B600 for half, B1,150 for whole bird) and the signature 5 Elements tea (B120/pot). Dim sum starts at B100. They also make unique lava-filled sweet potatoes (B135/3 pieces).

Man Ho

Man Ho occupies an elegant, spacious dining room on a second floor corner of the JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok. It’s everything you expect from a long-standing five-star hotel restaurant. The Cantonese and Szechuan food served here is truly excellent, too. The bright, sun-filled dining room, which has huge bay windows on two sides due to its corner location, and the well-priced dim sum deal make Man Ho a particularly pleasant lunch spot.

Mei Jiang

The elegant establishment overlooking the Chao Phraya River offers one of the best dim sum experiences in town. The food is authentic Cantonese fare, while the service is knowledgeable and courteous. There’s even a cool display of tea on the counter and specially-trained staff so you can have your very own mini tea ceremony.

G/F, The Peninsula Bangkok, 333 Charoen Nakhon Rd., 02-020-2888. Free shuttle boat from BTS Saphan Taksin

Shang Palace

One of the longstanding hotel Chinese restaurants recently welcomed one of the Shangri-La hotel group's most seasoned Cantonese chefs. Chow Wai Man started out 40 years ago training at the Shangri-La Academy in Hong Kong before returning to the group 10 years later. Some of his specialties he introduced here include “Buddha Jumps over the Wall” soup, which features dried scallop, abalone, shiitake and sea cucumber, and baked lobster with his special stock. Don’t miss one of our favorites, the humble braised Chinese spinach topped with salted egg and century egg—amazingly flavorful.

Shangri-la Hotel, 89 Soi Wat Suan Plu, 02-236-7777. BTS Saphan Taksin
