6 hot new restaurants to check out in Bangkok this August
Mexican from Melbourne, bao burgers from Hong Kong, Latin in Sathorn, a new pizza contender and more to sink your teeth into.
After years of working in high-end hotels, Panida Paethanom (aka Chef Poupee) has opened Burgers and Bangers. The restaurant actually began life as a small burger stand which ran for several months at On Nut market, but was forced to find this new home when the market closed at the end of last year. Up for order are six options: lamb with brie and caramelized onion (B290), cheese-stuffed chicken and mozzarella (B240), bacon-wrapped beef and cheddar (B280), pork belly and blue cheese (B270), vegetarian (B230) and the Signature (beef, bacon, lettuce, tomato and onion rings topped with Bearnaise sauce, B290). Each burger comes with a free side of either sweet potato fries, potato wedges, beer battered onion rings or potato salad. Bangers include the Cumberland (black peppered pork sausage) and Lincolnshire (pork sausage with mixed herbs), either of which is available on a bun (B170) or with traditional mash (B250).
Sukhumvit Rd., between Soi 18-20, 097-283-4598. Open Mon-Sat 2:30-11pm; Sun noon-8:30pm
Revolucion Cocktail has said since it opened last year that the space upstairs would be a proper restaurant. Now it has finally opened as Clandestino Cantina, where Mexican chef Gabriela Espinosa offers Latin cuisine that not only includes central and South American fare but also influences from Latin-derived language-speaking countries like Italy, Spain and France. Expect dishes like tartara de pescado (salmon and sea bass tartare, B360), paella (Spanish-style fried rice, B350-410), churrasco en chimichurri (beef strip loin with chimichurri sauce, B590) and, of course, churros with chocolate (B200).
50 Sathorn Soi 10, 02-235-4823. Open Mon-Sat 7pm-midnight
This new burger truck developed its saffron brioche buns in collaboration with Bangkok bread-men extraordinaire Conkey’s in order to deliver a fragrant buttery hit to the signature “Fat My Life” burger—baked tomato and caramelized onion with your choice of pork (B220) or beef (B30). The owner, Pattrayuth Peantham, comes from a Le Cordon Bleu cooking background, and is currently looking for a permanent spot to park up. For now, you can find them on Jul 26-28 at Suan Plern Market community mall, Rama 4 Road. Keep an eye on their Facebook for more.

The 20-seater Little Bao in Hong Kong is always packed out. But now it's branched out for the first time with a considerably bigger American-style diner in Bangkok. Drawing on her American upbringing, chef May Chow offers a playful, fast food-inspired take on traditional Chinese fare. Beyond appetizers like lamb tartare with tofu skin chips (B360) and salted-yolk orange chicken (B220), the bao burgers are the real star here, coming stuffed with fillings like pork belly, crispy Sichuan chicken, fish tempura and shiitake tempeh (B240 each). Also don’t miss the ice-cream bao (B120), which feature Guss Damn Good’s creamy flavors sandwiched between golden fried buns.
G/F, 72 Courtyard, 72 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-392-6922. Open Tue-Sun 6pm-midnight
This Australian-hailing bar blends Mexican booze, street art and hip-hop tunes into a space that transitions perfectly from dinner into a night out. Along with a dangerously good line of tequila and mezcal (try the Tommy's margarita), the place also serves some excellent Mexican food. Indulge in richly-spiced chillies, house-made tortillas and chips, and perfectly grilled corn on the cob with chipotle mayo, cotijia cheese and lime.
2/F, 72 Courtyard, 72 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 061-550-6346. Open Tue-Thu 6pm-1am; Sun 6pm-1am; Fri-Sat 6pm-2am
