In no particular order, here are the best new dishes we've tried in Bangkok over the past year:

1. The egg parmesan at Marcel (B240)

Don’t tell us you haven’t been to Sathorn Soi 10-12, where everything’s happening. Once you’re there, do order the egg parmesan at this new French bar-slash-restaurant. The runny egg yolk is complemented by ooey-gooey parmesan cheese with aromatic bell pepper cream and sauteed mushroom. Nothing can stop us from wiping the bowl clean with their complimentary baguette—good thing the bread’s free-flow.
Sathorn Soi 10, 02-635-3533. Open Tue-Fri 6pm-midnight, Sat-Sun 11.30am-midnight. BTS Chong Nonsi

2. The clam chowder at Crab & Claw (B220)

Although the hype surrounding this place centers on the big red lobsters, don’t let that stop you from trying this relatively humble dish. Without being too rich, this New England-style clam chowder is satisfyingly creamy and aromatic, with lovely texture from the clams and bacon. The accompanying cracker pairs wonderfully.
7/F, The Helix Quartier, The Emquartier, Sukhumvit Rd., 095-564-5422. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Phrom Phong

3. The oil-yaki at Mikaku (B3,500/100g)

Everything just comes together perfectly in this dish: from the well-marbled wagyu beef and seasoning to the cooking expertise of the chef, the third-generation owner of this 80-year teppanyaki restaurant. The tender oil-yaki is made from thin, handsliced tenderloin (only about 2mm thick), cooked and served one strip at a time. The result: melt-in-your-mouth goodness with a slightly sweet note.
2/F, 103/1 Sukhumvit 55, between Thonglor Soi 3-5, 02-712-9000. Open Mon-Fri 5pm-11pm, Sat-Sun 12pm-2pm

4. The kai palo tom saeb at Baan (B280)

Five-spiced egg is a Thai staple, as is tom saeb. When the two dishes collide, as at Baan, the results are nothing short of amazing, just bursting with herbal notes. The dish, taken from chef Ledu’s Thitid Tassanakajohn’s family recipe, looks set to stand the test of time.
139/5 Wireless Rd., 02-655-8995. Open Wed-Sun 11am-2.30pm, 5.30pm-10.30pm; Mon11am-2.30pm, 5.30pm-10.30pm. MRT Lumphini

5. The Chicken Movie at Err (B150)

The food at Err is comforting and casual, with a focus on drinking snacks. But seeing as it’s designed by chefs Bo and Dylan (of Bo.lan fame), you can expect authentic local flavors. The funkynamed Chicken Movie is little more than thin and crisp deepfried chicken skin served with a house-made Sriracha sauce, but the dish manages a perfect balance between sweetness, sourness and pure heat.
394/35 Maharaj Rd. Open Tue-Sun 11am-midnight

6. The dry-aged beef steak at Kom Ba Wa (B1,750)

The wonderfully tender steak is made from 60-day aged Tajima wagyu. The beef itself is packed with flavor, but it’s the potent ponzu jelly that takes the dish to another level and makes it worth the price tag.
39/19 Soi Suanphlu, Sathorn Rd., 02-679-3775. Open daily 11.30am-2pm, 6pm-1am

7. The World Famous Congee at Taper (B330)

This is the breakfast you’ve been waiting for: satisfying, healthy and hearty. The smoothest congee we’ve had in Bangkok (it’s almost like soup!) is made with pureed mineral-packed brown rice, served with thick but tender fried and sous-vide bacon, runny 63C egg, fried eringi and garnished with shredded fried ginger for that real Thai flavor.
G/F, 44/11 Thonglor Soi 13, 099-929-5464. Open Tue-Sun 9am-4pm

8. The steak-frites at Le Boeuf (B680)

Deliciously tender and flavorsome steak. Unlimited fries guaranteed to be crisp and piping hot. And a green sauce that tastes like a potent mix of dijon mustard and garlic laced with an unholy amount of butter. Le Boeuf serves up a heady mix.
Mayfair, Bangkok-Marriot Exclusive Apartments, 60 Lang Suan Rd., 093-971-8081. Open Mon-Fri 11.30am-11pm, Sat-Sun 11am-11pm

9. The ribs at Smokin’ Pug (B825/575)

Believe them when they tell you a whole rack is enough for two. The meat is tender without being too fatty, and glides from the bone with a little lubrication from a sweet and smoky, house-made barbecue sauce.
88 Surawong Rd., 083-029-7598. Open Tue-Sun 5pm-12am

10. The whole chili at Mejico (B185)

Basically a whole roasted bell pepper topped with a chorizo sausage chili con carne. We loved it. In fact we called it the only dish we tried there that didn’t lack a serious punch of flavor.
2/F, Groove @ CentralWorld, Rama 1 Rd., 02-252-6660. Open Sun-Thu 11am-midnight, Fri-Sat 11am-1am. BTS Siam

11. The iberico pork secreto at Harvest (B980)

The best thing we tried at this seafood-focused restaurant wasn’t the seafood, it was this: nothing more than thick-cut and beautifully-cooked slices of pinkish pork on top of sharp and slightly sweet braised fennel.
Chapter 31, 24/1 Sukhumvit Soi 31, 02-262-0762. Open daily 5.30pm-midnight. MRT Sukhumvit

12. The margherita pizza at Pizza Massilia (B250)

For our tastebuds, the pizza here is not as good as Peppina. But that doesn’t mean it’s not still damn tasty and way up there in this city’s booming pizza scene. You need to judge for yourself.
MK Gold Parking Lot, Soi Saladaeng. Open Tue-Sun 11:30am-2:30pm, 5:30pm-10pm. BTS Sala Daeng

13. The tomahawk at Opposite (B220/100g)

Added as a permanent fixture at Jess Barnes’ soonto-close Thonglor restaurant, this is one of the bestvalue tomahawks in town. The accompanying wasabi salt paste takes it to a whole other level.
2/F, 27/1 Sukhumvit Soi 51, 02-662-6330. Open Tue-Sun 6.30pm-late. BTS Thong Lo

14. The gnocchi in wild boar ragout with smoked ricotta cheese at Sfizio (B360)

Eats as well as it reads thanks to the earthy, rich, stew-y ragout and unctuous gnocchi. Not exactly elegant—a symphony of brown, topped by a visible film of fat—but with flavors this bold, you don’t care.
44/4 Sukhumvit Soi 21, 02-262-0405. Open Tue-Fri 11.30am-4pm, Tue-Sun 6pm-10.30pm. MRT Sukhumvit

15. The sea bass ceviche at 22 Kitchen & Bar (B540)

The best rendition of this increasingly available dish we’ve tried in Bangkok. The “tiger’s milk” actually lives up to its name with a fiery, acidic kick, while the perfectly crisp fried slither of chicken skin is a salty delight.
22/F, Dusit Thani, 946 Rama 4 Rd., 02-200-9000 #2345, Open daily 4pm-midnight. MRT Silom

16. The truffle and iberico pork grilled cheese at Revolucion Cocktail (B250)

A grilled cheese on steroids—bursting with flavor, intensely moreish and, dare we say it, better than any of the cocktails we’ve tried here.
50 Sathorn Soi 10, 02-235-4823. Open daily 5pm-2am

17. Wuntunmeen at Gokfayuen (B79)

This tiny place serves up everything you want in good Hong-Kong-style noodles, from the wellcooked thin egg noodles and the big, dense wontons to the quick-boiled Chinese cabbage and aromatic, flavorful soup.
161/7 Thonglor Soi 9, 02-712-5779. Open daily 11am-midnight. BTS Thonglor

18. The tuna burrito at Casa Azul (B300)

Heard of a sushi burrito? No, this is not that globally- hyped dish. But it helps us see the appeal. Add fresh tuna to Mexican-style rice, add all the fillings and stuff it inside a house-made tortilla. One word: more.
2/23 Phahon Yothin Soi 7, 02-619-5107. Open daily 11am-midnight.

19. The prawns on toast with goat yogurt and chives at Seven Spoons (B280)

The subtly flavored rye bread is topped with fresh, firm boiled shrimp in a killer goat yogurt-mayo mix—light, fresh and oh so delicious.
22-24 Chakkaphatdi Phong Rd., 02-629-9214. Open Mon-Sat 11am-3pm, Tue-Sun 6pm-11.30pm

20. The cheese dip at La Monita Urban Cantina (starting from B350)

If you love your Mexican food drowned in cheese then this is the dish for you. The warm bowl of Mexican-seasoned cheese, served with flour tortillas, is like a quesadilla, turned up to 11. The Longganisa pork sausage is delicious too.
6/F, The Helix Quartier, Emquartier, Sukhumvit Rd. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Phrom Phong
