5 venues to host Christmas parties in Bangkok that don’t suck
Why be bored when you can be boisterous instead?
The vibe: Parties are never dull when you've got beer pong in the house.
This party spot takes a classic drinking pastime to the next level. The high-tech, custom-built tables light up via sensors when a ball is dunked, and the cups are filled with water, while penalty beer is hygienically dispensed fresh from a tap—meaning there’s no bouncing of ping pong balls from the floor to your drink. If you're not a beer person, you can accept your penalty in classic cocktails or whiskey shots instead (there's no getting out of this one!).
2/F, The Opus Building, Thonglor Soi 10, 082-502-5848. Open daily 6pm-2am. BTS Thong Lo
The vibe: Lively atmosphere with Greek food, dancing and plate smashing.
The main dining hall here is made for big, boisterous gatherings, and the plate-smashing tradition is what will bring something genuinely different to your party. It’s not just built for casual walk-ins, either, thanks to free WiFi, a top-shelf projector and sound system, and a rentable open-air courtyard, Aesop’s works just as well for large corporate gigs (we hosted our BK Restaurant Week launch party there). For food, you’ll get hearty Greek classics like eight-hour lamb shoulder and chicken souvlaki. Don’t forget to end the night with some moves on the dance floor where guests are encouraged to hurl crockery, as is Greek tradition, to a soundtrack of “Zorba’s Dance” or some house tunes curated by its in-house DJ.
120 Sala Daeng Soi 1/1, 062-567-7751. Open Tue-Sun 5:30pm-midnight. BTS Sala Daeng
The vibe: Hip bar with craft beers, video games and board games.
Here, you can enjoy over 20 labels of craft beer while doing everyone’s favorite activity: playing games. The options range from board games and air hockey, to PS4 and Wii U, where you can team up to compete against each other. Winners can celebrate with a tasty, tender wagyu striploin, while losers can drown their sorrow with a Rogue Dead Guy Ale or an Epic Los Locos.
Civic Horizon, Sukhumvit Soi 63, 082-441-8006. Open Tue-Sun 5pm-1am. BTS Ekkamai
The vibe: Classy Christmas on a chill rooftop, with classic and hot club jazz from live bands.
Named after a vibrant district in Brooklyn, this bar channels America through and through—from graffitied walls and dangling lightbulbs to jazz music from vinyl and live bands. The cocktails mimic recipes from bars in New York City and are all named after jazz songs. Hosting a party here means you can enjoy Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue while sipping on a drink with the same name (vodka, blue curacao, and pineapple juice) and munching on American finger food.
6/F, Inn Office Building, Phahon Yothin Rd., 094-560-7222. Open daily 5pm-midnight. BTS Saphan Kwai
The feel: Christmas in Cuba—why not?
Step inside this secret-ish bar to party in pre-revolution Cuban style, with shuttered windows, spare lighting and crumbling walls giving off a convincingly clandestine feel. The drinks menu is packed with rum-based cocktails, both classic and experimental, while the food menu features street-style grub in the form of empanadas (spinach and pulled pork) and Cuban sandwiches. Music also sticks to the Afro-Cuban theme, with DJs playing salsa songs that encourage revelers to dance the night away.
Sukhumvit Soi 11, 02-061-5344. Open daily 6pm-2am. BTS Nana
