At an event held at the Italian Cultural Institute in Tokyo yesterday, the upper crust of the pizza world met to pick the world’s best ‘za at the 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific 2023. Three Bangkok pizzerias made the ranking, with Pizza Massilia ranking highest.

Coming in at No. 8, Pizza Massilia with chef Michele Fernando was named Bangkok’s top pizzeria at the event—a long way from the shop’s first 2015 pizza truck in Sala Daeng.

They were followed very closely by Pizzeria Mazzie at No. 9 and its New York-style restaurant from chef Jonathan Spearman and L’Oliva at No. 29, featuring the Neapolitan slices of Italian Gabriele Luna.

As for special awards from the Italian pizza kingmakers, Pizza Massilia took the Best Service 2023 and L’Olvia grabbed Best Wine List 2023. Our friends to the south in Phuket also took home best pizza awards, including Marni at No. 36 and Five Olives.

Topping the list this year was the Tokyo contingent, coming in with Asia’s best pizza from The Pizza Bar On 38th, followed by Bottega in Beijing and Pizzeria Peppe Napoli Sta’ Ca, also in Tokyo.

Last year, the big plaudits went to Peppina, which came in 5th in the Asia Pacific, outranking Pizza Massilia from the previous year. Pizzeria Mazzie, Via Emilia Restaurant, and L’Oliva all also appeared on the 2022 list.

Those in the Top 15 this year—both Pizza Massilia and Pizzeria Mazzie—now have the opportunity to enter the 100 Best Pizzerias in the World in September, held in Naples.
