10 regular restaurants that serve great desserts
They might not specialize in sweets, but that doesn’t mean their dessert game isn’t on point
With its phonebook-thick menu and chalkboards scrawled with notes on viniculture, aging processes and pairing tips, this rustic wine bistro is as much about getting educated as it is about getting sozzled. Alongside its organic and biodynamic wines and Mediterranean dishes, it’s desserts offer a step up from typical bistro fare. Try the whole-baked apple with cinnamon sprinkle and vanilla ice cream (B250) and strawberry millefeuille (B290).

Baan Khanitha’s Thonglor outlet clearly aims to attract a wide audience: from a young, hip crowd in the funky terrace, to wealthy families and tourists in their lovely colonial-style house at the back of this leafy compound. It’s therefore not surprising that it offers an expansive menu of Thai and Western dishes and traditional sweets like kaao neow mamwuang (mango with sticky rice and coconut milk, B230) served with coconut ice cream, and bua loy Baan Kanitha ( taro, mung bean, and pumpkin dumplings in coconut milk, B120).

Tucked down a rabbit warren in the middle of Ratchada-Rama 4, this deli-slash-restaurant presides over imported cheese, cold cuts, fresh imported seafood, and well-executed Mediterranean dishes such as New Zealand mussels (B555) in a rich, salty broth with crispy fries, and tuna tartare (B430) with fresh fish and mango salsa. The ever-changing dessert list is always worth exploring, though we’re stuck on the dense chocolate & sea salt caramel tart (B190/piece).
490 Soi Phai Singto, Ratchadaphisek Rd., 02-258-13853. Open Tue-Fri noon-3pm, 6-10:30pm; Sat noon-10:30pm; Sun 6-10pm. MRT Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre

Occupying a bright yellow shop-house opposite Gaggan’s pristine white house, Gaa delivers a younger, more playful vibe. This carries over to dishes that apply the finesse and detail of fine dining to street food. Dessert, too, straddles the line between comforting and intriguing. A betel leaf half coated with chocolate, half sprinkled with fennel powder and red-rice cone of burnt coconut sugar soft serve with pork floss should give you a sense of what we mean.

Crowds pack out every Greyhound Cafe in town for good reason: the food is reliable, comforting and manages to pull off creative, fusion flavors. They dish out crowd-pleasing desserts options ranging from crepe Suzette (B90), sea salt caramel chocolate cake with vanilla cream (B190), and walnut blondie (B120/B160 with ice cream), to Thai desserts such as tub tim krob (water chestnuts in syrup, B120), and sakoo piek (tapioca balls in sweet pudding paste, B120).

Chic and cheerful in eye-popping aquamarine, this Thonglor pasta house’s uncompromising dedication to authenticity is obvious with its range of homemade pastas and sauces (all available to-go), but the desserts are just as genuine and homey feeling. Try the Nutella-stuffed bomboloni (fried Italian donut, B120/piece) which explodes creamy Nutella filling in your mouth. Other great dessert options include ricotta and lemon tart (B320) served with roasted red grapes, and refreshing Italian gelato (B140/scoop).

Visit Nonna Nella on a weeknight and you’ll find a familiar scene of office workers guzzling wine and chowing down on pizza and pasta surrounded by decorative wine barrels, inspirational quotes, and graffiti murals. Arguably the main draw is the pizza (from B280), but desserts are also a must-try. We like homemade lemon tart (B220) packed with sweet and savory lemon filling, and the pannacotta (B200) served with organic jam sauce.

Ask locals where they recommend for the pinnacle of Thai dining and they'll likely say here. Step inside a modernist dining room with vaulted ceilings and red design touches to get a traditional taste from gaeng ranjuan (shrimp-paste pork soup, B380), which is smooth yet complex owing to salty shrimp paste, sour lime, a touch of sweetness and the spicy kick of chili. Don’t forget to order desserts such as krong krand kra ti sod (soft and sticky flour balls served in coconut cream with roasted sesame on top, B250), or the restaurant’s namesake dish, saneh jaan (pillowy steamed yellow mung bean balls served with coconut milk and a dash of nutmeg powder, B250).

This venue’s luxurious rooms of azure with button-backed leather sofas and louvered wooden panels welcome a buzzy crowd to dine on recipes drawn from Thailand’s eastern provinces. The menu here reads like a phonebook. There’s some 18 pages of savory dishes and some hard-to-find desserts. Must-try’s include the kanom kho (thin-skinned dumplings with sweet coconut filling served in coconut milk, B100), soft sugar crepe with green bean and coconut filling (B100), and turmeric infused sticky rice topped with dried shrimp and coconut (B100).
90 Sukhumvit Soi 33, 02-088-0968. Open Wed-Sun noon-11pm; Mon noon-11pm; Fri-Sat noon-1am.
While the two-story, semi-alfresco Mexican restaurant swaps the usual gaudily painted walls, sombreros and pinatas for black-and-white collages, maroon banquettes and a pinball machine, the food lays to bed any fears about legitimacy. This is definitely true of the sweets. Desserts play around with the familiar, such as the torta de helado (an ice cream sandwich with choc-chili cookie crumble, peanut butter and candied peanuts, B225). - B 225
