9 great Thai restaurants to help kick off Songkran
Time to treat yourself to some plain old good Thai food this New Year
It might be way out in Thonburi, but this place still enjoys pretty good foot traffic. The chefs mine their deep knowledge of Thai food to add unique touches to typical comfort dishes, resulting in some extraordinary flavors. Their lhon pu (coconut milk dip with crab meat, B190) is brought to another level thanks to the added flavors and finely grained texture of salted egg yolk. The refreshing salmon pla (Thai spicy salad, B220) features clean and crisp flourishes of fresh cucumber, pennywort and herbs, pairing perfectly with a citrusy dressing that also cooks the raw salmon slices. Even the simplest kai jiew (egg omelet, B90) gets dressed up with kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass. Though the venue is a bit out the way and requires traveling across the river, we’d say it’s worth a casual meal on a Sunday.
2/F Riverside Plaza, Charoen Nakorn Rd., 096-626-4519. Open daily 11am-10pm
The first thing you notice when stepping inside this stylish home-turned-restaurant is the prominent use of dark wood and a ceiling covered with kradong (flat baskets). Chef couple Duangporn "Bo" Songvisava and Dylan Jones make all their Thai food from scratch, including curry pastes using only the best ingredients. With no a la carte menu available, groups sign up for a degustation menu where all the dishes are served simultaneously. The sharing experience is akin to a Thai home-cooked meal, but expect something above and beyond your usual comfort food.

The owner of popular ice cream shop Iberry turns the focus to cafe culture at this greenhouse-inspired hideaway. Here, it’s all about Thai dishes with a twist, like the Floral Summer Rolls (Vietnamese fresh rolls stuffed with grilled pork and edible flowers like butterfly peas) or the fall-of-bone lamb leg in spicy Moroccan-style Massaman served with roti. If you are not feeling some curry-based fire, just get the anchan & rose milk tea, which is sweet and creamy from rose syrup and milk.

The luxurious Siam Hotel is a destination in itself, and its signature restaurant, Chon, is no less beautiful than the rest of this sprawling, Art Deco-themed riverside mansion. The food is simple and authentic with dishes representing Thailand’s various culinary regions, such as the gaeng hunglay moo (juicy kurobuta pork belly served in a sweet-yet-spicy Northern curry, B400) and the tender grilled chicken served with somtam (B420) representing Isaan. If this sounds too spicy, just opt for a glass of wine (B425-B625) or beers (B220-B350) to cool your tongue.

At this riverside shop-house in the shadow of Wat Po, chef couple Duangporn "Bo" Songvisava and Dylan Jones curate down-to-earth street-food favorites and one-plate specials, but with quality ingredients and expert culinary techniques. The menu spans a lot of comforting finger foods from Isaan sausage (B220) and Chiang Rai sausage (B195) to braised mussels in a clay pot (B280) and pak dong ruam skewers (B65), which beautifully combine pickled garlic, turnip and mustard. The real bonus here is the drinks—original cocktails featuring hard-to-find local spirits—and the kitschy, retro '60s and '70s vibe.
394/35 Maharaj Rd., 02-622-2291. Open daily 11am-9pm

This unusually-named eatery is a part of the burgeoning culinary empire of chef Ian Kittichai. Set in shocking-pink old house, you can expect Asian comfort food with some playful twists such as the pad Thai with crispy bits of duck and unctuous foie gras (B430), the umami salmon tartare wonton tacos (B260) and the battered shrimp in spicy Sriracha-aioli glaze (B380), which all perfectly accompany the drinks. They also have classic cocktails with same simple tweaks like the Sangsom Salted Caramel Whisky Sour (B260) which is mellow-yet-strong.

This elegantly designed, contemporary space packs plenty of style. It's menu is devised by local food guru Torroong Jarungidanan, who has published two cookbooks and also writes a regular newspaper column. Take the powerful-flavors of the gaeng ranjuan (shrimp-paste pork soup, B380) for example, which are smooth yet complex thanks to sour lime and chili, or the kai palo moo tao jiew (B320), where three-day braised eggs are steamed alongside baby pork belly and tofu to produce very bold flavors.
Glasshouse at Sindhorn, 130-132 Wireless Rd., 02-650-9880. Open daily 11:30am-2pm, 6-10pm. BTS Ratchadamri
Sri Trat is in. A success. Even weeknights, your reservation might get turned away if it’s not made early enough. It’s luxurious rooms of azure, button-backed leather sofas and louvered wooden panels welcome a buzzy, high-end crowd to dine on recipes drawn from Thailand’s eastern provinces. Featuring delicious-yet-underrated Eastern Thai dishes like chamuang leaf curry (B220) packed with plentiful chunks of braised pork in delicately sour curry and lon pu kai (B540), a creamy chili dip served alongside a whole mud crab. For drinks, try the O-Liang (B320)—a Thai coffee-spiked mix of whiskey, port, apricot brandy and some spices.
90 Sukhumvit Soi 33, 02-088-0968. Open Wed-Sun noon-11pm; Mon noon-11pm; Fri-Sat noon-1am. BTS Phrom Phong

Based on the many experiences we’ve had at this petite three-story shophouse, we continue to think the hyperbole is truly justified. With immaculate service and recipes borrowed from Trat and Khon Kaen, giving delightful rare dishes such as the standout moo cha muang (pork stewed with Guttiferae tree leaves, B170) whose wonderfully rich and sour tomato sauce is a revelation. For desserts, take the melt-in-your-mouth Thai tea panna cotta (B110).
