10 restaurants in Bangkok that do Italian food justice
Italian restaurants with flavorful pastas and endless wine lists
Taking over a stately old home on Sathorn’s tiny Soi Goethe, this Italian restaurant has well-heeled crowds going gaga for its low-key vibe, arguably one of the best wine lists in town, and polished yet rustic dishes. The past menu here is vast (22 choices in total). Choosing highlights are tough, but some recommended dishes are the Spaghetti All'Aragosta (B790) with Maine lobster spaghetti and Sicilian cherry tomatoes, or the Fettuccine con Salsiccia & Funghi (homemade fettucine, Italian sausage & mushroom ragout, B450).
22 Sathorn Soi 1 Yaek 2 (Goethe), 02-287-2402. Open daily 10:30am-11pm.
Italian fine dining in Bangkok would not be where it is today without Gianni Favro. The longtime chef has delighted local rainmakers and power movers for the past 20-plus years with Mediterranean-inflected dishes, educating diners on the nuances of Dover sole, burrata and handmade pasta along the way. The refined setting echoes the restaurant’s reputation.

Head chef Stefano Borra (formerly chef-owner of the one-Michelin-starred Ristorante VO) has kept up the reputation for comfortably priced degustation menus that aim for Piedemontese flavors. The huge wine menu spotlights Borolo.

Chic and cheerful in eye-popping aquamarine (a mainstay color of the brand), this pasta house’s uncompromising dedication to authenticity is writ large in dishes like the tagliatelle Bolognese. This high-end take on a classic pairs juicy 24-hour-cooked wagyu beef shoulder with ribbons of daily-made pasta that are silky and smooth but firm to the bite.

While you’ll still find some of Europe’s most-prized beef cuts dry-aging in the showpiece chiller, Il Fumo is all about new-age Portugese cuisine. It’s been on our Top Tables official selection every year of its existence, and for good reason. Chef-partner Nelson Amorim brings the food culture of his native Portugal while cooking on open flames using house-made charcoal — it’s dynamite, you should eat here.

Specializing in Southern Italian cuisine, a style punctuated by the region's boldly flavored vegetables and bountiful seafood by the nearby Medditerranean Sea. Here, Chef Walter D'Ambrosio delights you with a unique selection of raw and cured seafood delicacies, all homemade pastas, pizzas, premium fish and meat main courses as well as traditional desserts. The Sing Sing and Iron Balls crew strengthen their foothold in Phrom Phong with this home-style Italian joint. Helmed by chef Edoardo Bonavolt (of plant-based trailblazer Barefood Bangkok), the kitchen busts out Italian comfort food in the cozy, cantina-like confines that used to house Quince. Expect dishes like Agnolotti del Pin—hand-made stuffed pasta with prosciutto, mortadella and Parmesan cheese—and Tartufo Nero Pizzette, a mini-pizza with mushrooms, mascarpone, scamorza and a liberal amount of truffle paste. Wash it down with signature drinks like the Bitch Spritz and Gigi Bellini.
4 Sukhumvit Soi 45, 02-662-4478. Open Mon-Thu 3-10pm; Fri-Sat 3-11pm; Sun 7am-6pm.
Italy’s osterias traditionally are much simpler; modest places for wine and light eats. This is the opposite, but to all our benefit. Food from 20 Italian regions fills the menu—Roman pizza, Neapolitan pies, carbonara, Bolognese, orecchiette and olive all’ascolana (pork-stuffed fried olives). Everything’s made from scratch and most ingredients are flown in from Italy. The pizza is prepared in massive slabs, and served al taglio (“by the cut”) and wine by the glass is barrel-poured.

Through a menu that charts in-house rotisserie meats, unctuous stews, Mediterranean seafood and incredible homemade pastas, chef Paolo Vitaletti’s home-style interpretation of Italian cuisine is as close as the city comes to true trattoria dining. Rarer, seasonal items come and go to complement the Roman family recipes, but what seemingly never changes is the restaurant’s mix of class and casual charm, only heightened by an excellent wine list.
20/4 Sukhumvit Soi 31, 02-261-2056. Open daily 6pm-10:30pm; Sun 11:30am-2:30pm
