1. Lunch at the new foodie-focused community malls

One of the most-awaited community malls this year is The Commons (335 Thong Lor Soi 17, 089-152-2677), a loft-like open-plan community mall from the siblings behind Roast cafe. The ambitious project works kind of like a food court, only a really, really good one, where you can choose to dine at hot foodie names like Peppina, Soul Food 555, Meat & Bones and Bao & Buns spin-off Xiao Chi to name just a few. All the food is served up in a shared outdoor space that’s more like a park or public library, under the cooling breeze of huge fans. Just across the street is 72 Courtyard (72 Sukhumvit Soi 55, 02-392-7999), a slick, open-plan mall that features all the coolest names from Sathorn Soi 12Rocket, Lady Brett, UNCLEas well as some soon-to-open new bars and clubs. Like The Commons, you’ll find acres of concrete, plants and steel, with as much space devoted to communal courtyards as to the venues themselves. Also joining them further up the street on Thonglor Soi 4 is The Maze. So far just a few dessert cafes have opened here, like Mocking Tales, a new dessert cafe specializing in ice-cream-based desserts inspired by fairy tales.

2. New independent spots for coffee, brunch and dessert

It’s not all about what’s in the new community malls. The cozy Warm Wood Cafe (137/1 Thonglor Soi 10, 02-714-9974) brings out all the cafe staples from desserts to coffees, while Dandelion (919, Sukhumvit Rd., between soi 49 and 51, 085-145-3181) specializes in hearty dessert and breakfast dishes plus monthly baking workshops. Around the corner, Toby’s (68/1 Sukhumvit Soi 38, 02-712-1774) is a photogenic spot for all-day Australian breakfast staples, specialty coffee and cold-pressed juice. Once Social Bar & Cafe (308 Thonglor Soi 10, 084-777-7322) also serves all-day brunch and dessert, plus some outrageous “freakshakes.”

3. Pre-game at these cool hidden bars

This street is no longer all about the massive drinking and dancing venues when night comes. Instead, you’ll find a surprising choice of speakeasy-style bars to hide yourself away from the crowds and indulge in a seriously good drink. We recommend you kick off your night at Rabbit Hole (125 Sukhumvit Soi 55, 081-822-3392), hidden behind an unmarked bar next to Ainu Bar, where you’ll find craft cocktails amid a hip, Thonglor vibe. Try the The Extra Mellow (B320), which uses Chivas Regal Extra, Frangelico, homemade kaffir lime lime syrup, fresh dill, citrus and egg white. Whisky lovers should head down the other side of the road for Black Amber Thonglor Social Club (Thong Lor Soi 6, 092-276-2772), a super-stylish gentleman’s bar with a focus on single malt whisky and rum tasting flights. We recommend the Chivas Regal flight, consisting of Chivas Regal 12 years, Chivas Regal Extra and Chivas Regal 18 years (B540). Or go for The Glenlivet 12 on the rocks (B290).

4. Boozy dinner at restaurants that take food and drink equally seriously

For a restaurant where you can have dinner while still keeping the party going, head over to Thonglor Soi 10 and check out the recently opened 7th Street Bar & Bistro (Thong Lor Soi 10, 02-714-8052), which has a cozy but sizable garden and serves a range of Thai and International “drink-friendly” dishes. As well as astrong list of imported draft beers, 7th Street also offers an equally solid list of cocktail to go with your dinner.  Another must-visit spot for dinner carries on the tucked-away speakeasy vibe, this time in a rooftop garden on top of TO-B by Muse Thonglor (see no. 5). The charismatic, open-air Roof Hideaway (159/8 Thonglor Soi 10, 087 888 5599) specializes in dishes where East meets West, all served alongside equally excellent drinks.

5. Party at the reconceptualized TO-B by Muse Thonglor

End the night by checking out long-time Thonglor nightlife institution Muse’s latest addition, TO-B by Muse Thonglor. The massive bar offers live bands performing Thai and international covers daily, but we’d say the highlight has got to be the DJs, who get the night hopping with bass-heavy Billboard hits.
