Australia - Chef Bar

Led by Roland Graham, a veteran chef of 40 years, this hole-in-the-wall has a firm grasp on the hearty Anglo-influenced classics from Down Under. Staples like the Robbins Island pasture-fed wagyu burger (B430) give dimensions of flavor worthy of its high price, as does the flavorful navarin lamb pie (B290) served up with homey and delicious mash potatoes. They also offer a selection of Australian and New Zealand wines to go with red meat, as well as Beerlao and  rotating selection of New Zealand craft beer.

Sukhumvit Soi 21/2, 080-052-7336, open Mon - Sat 5-9pm; Sat noon-3pm. MRT Sukhumvit.

United States - The Smokin' Pug

After reborning at the new location on Lang Suan Road, this barbecue shack makes it even easier to enjoy the American vibe thanks to its rustic decor, and foot-tapping jazz. The traditional Texas-style low ‘n slow cooking methods are written all over the food here—like the brisket, ribs, lamb and even the cheese in the mac ‘n’ cheese. The result is intense flavor and tender dishes that come in huge portions and will probably make your waistband tighter. Ignore your tummy, then enjoy dessert and cocktails provided by mixologist who’s really generous with the bottle.

105 Lang Suan Road, 083-029-7598, open Tue-Sat 5pm-midnight; Sun 5-11pm. BTS Ratchadamri.

Spain - Broken Eggs

The restaurant displays the full breadth of traditional-to-progressive tapas from prowess as Chef Jacobo Astray provides traditional dishes dedicated to his Galician roots. Try the creamy, locally made burrata with fresh berries and basil oil (B260) or seafood paella (B180) which is deliciously cooked on the weekends. Both go well with a variety of drinks like a glass of Haceinda Lopez de Haro’s Blanco (B220), the Mediterranean-style gin and tonics (starting B200) and a selection of bottled beer dedicated to small Thai breweries.

112/7 Ekkamai Soi 69-71, 02-047-7811, open Tue-Sun 5-11:30pm.

France - JP French Restaurant

Aside from being known as a place to get great meals at competitive prices, this French bistro also uses very good produce to create authentic-tasting flavors, like the fresh and tender escargots (B360) drenched in parsley and butter, as well as foie gras terrine (B550). Try ordering a bottle from the French-leaning wine list (it's all almost under B3,000) while chit-chatting with your date in this cozy, casual space.

59/1 Sukhumvit Soi 31, 02-258-4247, open Mon-Sat 11:30am-2:30pm and 6:30-11pm, MRT Sukhumvit.

Italy - La Bottega di Luca

Italianos would feel like home here from the authentic of food drawn from all parts of Italy, and the hands-on service by Chef Luca and his crew, who are happy to spill knowledge about the rotating daily specials and where the dishes come from. Even though there’s no pizza, dishes like the Risotto di Luca topped with black truffle cheese and Italian bacon and the homemade tiramisu served with wild berries and orange slices will ease away your disappointment.

Terrace 49, Sukhumvit Soi 49, 02-204-1731, open Tue-Sun 11:30am-3pm; daily5:30-11pm, BTS Phrom Phong.

Germany - Bei Otto

Step inside this medieval tavern to discover German food that seems to have been designed with beer in mind—featuring a remarkable selection of sausages, sauerkraut and other homemade delicacies with authentic tastes. The atmosphere is even more special as it gives you bucolic hint of Black Forest instead of the elegant and cliche Berlin. The Euro-trash dance music opening in the background might be annoying, but we guarantee it’s worth the chance of eating comfort food like this.

1 Sukhumvit Soi 20, 02-260-0869, open daily 11am-midnight, BTS Asok.
