The team from Thonglor speakeasy Rabbit Hole presents creative locavore flavors at Bangkok’s most exciting new kitchen. The black and white tiles and French windows say upscale bistro, though there’s a clear modern edge to the huge open kitchen and bar-seating format. Texas-hailing chef Riley Sanders heads a kitchen that paints with the flavors of Thailand as inspired by world cuisine. In order to create something unique to Bangkok, local ingredients and inventive cooking techniques come together here, resulting in dishes like Mekong catfish, caramelized with tamarind tare sauce in the same way the Japanese glaze unagi (freshwater eel). The classic-looking bar keeps standards on a par with Rabbit Hole while complementing the local flavors of the restaurant.

Cock. & Cow

One of the hidden gems in Maze Thonglor, Cock. & Cow’s black, dark-toned wooden tables, bright red neon lights and long sofa tied up with belt-like straps make it a good chill spot for late nights spent listening to live music every Fri-Sat. Regulars come here for the juicy and tender spice-rubbed pork chops and other fusion dishes like scallop carpaccio and spicy capellini pasta with chili and bacon garlic.

Cuisine de Garden

The space in Ekkamai previously belonging to Toot Yung and Pandora Art galleries is now home to a new offshoot of Chiang Mai’s nature-inspired restaurant Cuisine de Garden. The interior sees a dining room with dark wood flooring and raw concrete punctuated by actual tree trunks, setting the scene for chef-owner Leelawat “Nan” Mankongtiphan’s food, which is only available in a four-course set dinner. Nan plays with various forms and textures of ingredients, like in the dish Rain Forest, which combines beef tartare with beef tuile, seasoned cured egg yolk and parsley powder.

Ekkamai Soi 2,  061-626-2816. Open Tue-Sun 6-11pm

La Dotta

The powerhouse couple behind Vesper and Il Fumo ventures away from fine dining to something more down-to-earth. Sitting in a single-unit shophouse on Thonglor Soi 9, La Dotta aims for a fuss-free atmosphere where pasta costs around B300-400 a go. Sicilian chef Giampiero Quartararo mans a kitchen that whips up fresh pasta daily and vows to only serve dried pasta that's organic. The beverage menu is headlined by Old World natural wines and fruity Italian cocktails.

161/6 Thonglor Soi 9, 02-392-8688. Open Tue-Sun 11am-2:30pm, 5:30-11pm

Golden Coins Taproom

Following the closure of much-loved beer bar Let the Boy Die, its team is back with a new project. Golden Coins Taproom takes its name from the owner’s brewery, launched in 2011, which legally produces its beers in Vietnam before importing them back home. With its orange bricks, bare concrete floor and splashes of black, the place feels raw and unfinished—but in a good way. The six-tap craft beer bar exclusively serves strains of Golden Coins beer. Here, The Commons’ barbecue specialist Meat and Bones serves up its flavorful pork and beef ribs. Other house-made bites include a fish-sauce fried chicken and beef burger, featuring a pillow-soft bun and juicy beef patty.

Ekamai Mall, Ekkamai Soi 10,  082-675-9673. Open daily 5pm-mignight

Nowhere

Ekkamai’s new rooftop restaurant might only be six floors up. You'll be greeted by bare concrete steps in the center of a minimal glass cube and its laidback decor, the stylish loft space is rather a casual hangout spot. The creative kitchen prepares continent-spanning dishes that play with global flavors, from a Thai plahang tangmo-derived watermelon salad which make uses of bonito flakes and sumac vinaigrette, to pulled pork and mango quesadilla. You can find various tea mocktails from Hyrbs like Garden in the Nightmare (a virgin tea sangria), while on the boozy side, try the Julep from Nowhere cocktail which puts a twist on the mint julep with chorizo oil-infused bourbon.

Toro

This hugely successful Barcelona-inspired tapas bar began in Boston, was quickly followed by one in New York, and then Bangkok last year. Toro’s blend of modern and rustic elements comes straight from its New York cousin. Here in Bangkok, chef Zach Watkins’ modern tapas concept adapts itself to suit local ingredients and palates. That means grilled pork jowl is served with local pickled mango, crispy shrimp, an colatura, an Italian-style fish sauce.

Tori Tama

Awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand in Singapore in 2016, the restaurant offers the widest range of chicken parts you’ve ever seen. While most yakitori places stick to breast, thigh, wings, gizzard and liver, Tori Tama serves virtually every part of the chicken. Here, your skewers are grilled over largely special charcoal in an open kitchen right before you. From the lightly charred, oh-so-juicy thigh to the crisp, slightly caramelized hen’s tail, or the unbelievably smooth liver, the chicken is so good it outshines the premium-priced wagyu.

Touche Hombre

This Australian-hailing bar blends Mexican booze, street art and hip-hop tunes into a space that transitions perfectly from dinner into a night out. Along with a dangerously good line of tequila and mezcal, the place also serves some excellent Mexican food. The tacos don’t only stand out for the perfectly soft corn tortillas but also fillings that go beyond carnitas and refried beans to the likes of octopus and chorizo.

The Missing Burro

Nestled in a garden down the surprisingly peaceful and residential Thonglor Soi 7, this restaurant does such good Mexican food that in-the-know crowds have taken notice and we highly recommend you book ahead. From a shipping container-turned-kitchen, the Mexican owners, two brothers, serve up traditional cuisine like the delicious corn tortilla carnitas whose pork is fried in lard, orange, beer and spices. Wash it down with a frothy pisco sour.
