If you ever need a reminder that Bangkok is a truly, truly insane place, head down to local Mexican restaurant El Santo for a spot of pro wrestling. Santo Slam is a tequila-fueled family friendly event featuring the talents of PSE (ParadiseSportsEntertainment) Thailand Wrestling.
This special night on July 31 of Santo Slam would see the first awarding of the PSE Thailand Wrestling Belt, which after two elimination matches, would see the belt won by “Thailand’s Heaviest Muay Thai Monster” Blobtang, pinning Canadian heel Ryan Rogan.
Blobtang, who comes into the ring with high Muay Thai energy, first pinned cowardly Marc Sebire, heel and self-styled martial arts expert, after Ryan Rogan’s win against the Bollywood Megastar.
Santo Slam has been happening at Santo Slam since September of last year, and it hasn’t been slowing down—drawing big crowds of very happy children and quite drunk adults.
Expect plenty of trash talk, pageantry, and suplexes at the regular Santo Slam, where the B400 entry buys you a free margarita. If you’re more interested in the food than the DDTs at this Soho Hospitality spot, you’ll find Chef Daniel Calderón Camacho in the kitchen serving up Mexican classics. Behind the bar, there’s a decent selection of tequila and mezcal to mix with their signature cocktails.
After the match, all the rivalries are forgotten, and fans get a chance to take photos with—and then get body slammed by—the wrestlers. That seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen, but a good time. After the championship match, a number of patrons wandered into the ring to take their shirts off and get slapped by the pros.
PSE Thailand Wrestling has been having shows all over town, from their own training arena to when BK Magazine first covered them on the rooftop of Arcadia Barcade. While pro wrestling is still finding its feet in Thailand, PSE Thailand Wrestling has found quite the following in China, with hundreds of thousands of views for their livestreams.
Also, if you smell what the Rock is cooking and it smells pretty good, then PSE Thailand Wrestling hosts weekly pro wrestling training at their PSE Pro Wrestling Training Academy. Who knows, maybe you’ll be the one to unseat Blobtang.
