Bunker

Fresh, simple, well-executed, original yet devoid of gimmicks, there's a reason why the food at Bunker has been more hotly anticipated than any other restaurant this year. Some of the menu's 16 dishes verge on tapas portions, but the flavors are anything but small:  the wagyu beef tartar is spiked with daikon radish and radish sprouts; the cured foie gras torchon paired with candied cashew and chili mango; the smoky plate of fatty wagyu short rib falls from the bone in perfectly glazed, inch-thick slices. The space's craggy concrete lines are also something of a novelty, softened by turquoise banquettes and octogonal globes of light.

Chope’s pick: Grilled Beef Tongue and Snails with Parsley Froth

Cocotte Farm Roast & Winery

A huge rotisserie oven imported from France dominates this warm, rusticated space, telling you everything you need to know about Cocotte's food: simple, on the bone, portioned for sharing and heavy on the meat. That's not to say their vegetable dishes aren't wonderful too, whether its a salad made from up to 15 Northern Thailand-grown vegetables or a creamy soup of mushroom and tomato. Don't miss the Crispy Pig—tender-roasted pork belly with honey-beer glaze and caramelized apple.

Err Urban Rustic Thai

The chef duo behind Bangkok’s Thai fine dining institution Bo.lan have brought their expertise to a new genre of modern, casual Thai cuisine. Their latest project, Err, is set in a retro shop-house just down the street from Wat Pho, where they’ve trained their chefs to whip up rejuvenated versions of Thailand’s best drinking snacks. The menu comprises dishes intended to be shared among friends alongside cocktails.

Chope’s pick: Chicken Movie (Nang Kai Tord)

Il Fumo Restaurant & Bar

This grand old villa reborn as a cocktails and Italian grill restaurant boasts some of Europe's most prized meats, including Galician beef and prosciutto and pork neck from the Ca' Lumaco Estate (between Modena and Bologna). On top of this, fresh seafood is also on the menu, cooked on big wood-fired ovens and then grilled to accompany pasta or risotto. Overall, there's a lightness of touch here that makes this much more than just an ordinary steak house.

Chope’s pick: Tomahawk (Marble 5)

Lady Brett 72 Courtyard

The second branch of the grill specialist Lady Brett not only follows the same concept as the original venue, but also carries its brother UNCLE bar atop. Charcoal barbecued meats rule the small menu here, with options including chicken, pork chop, rib eyes and seafood like tiger prawns and pink snapper. Don’t miss the grilled chicken burger, charcoal-barbecued chicken thigh with horseradish mayo and homemade pickles in a house-made bun.

Lady Brett Tavern

Just starting its lunch service recently, The European tavern-referencing bistro now seems even more charming than when it first opened back in early 2014, with the thick brick wall taken out and a glass-window replacement. The concise menu puts the spotlight on barbecue. Expect the likes of barbecued chicken thigh, tomahawk steak and Aussie rib-eye, served with our pick of truffle-black garlic sauce.

Chope’s pick: Australian Black Angus Sirloin

LeDu Wine Bar & Restaurant

Once in a while, a Thai restaurant comes around that manages to fuse classic Thai food with modern Western techniques in a manner that doesn’t feel heavy-handed or forced. Such is the case with LeDu, headed by Chef Thitid Tassanakajorn, a Thai chef with a degree from the Culinary Institute of America and stints at 11 Madison Park and The Modern. The menu changes seasonally and the wine list is sourced solely from organic or boutique outfits.

Chope’s pick: Chu-Chee Mackerel

Osha Bangkok

The very definition of “OTT,” Osha hosts a menu of reimagined Thai dishes in a dining room crowned with a gold-leaf-coated stairwell and elaborate wallpaper depicting scenes from Thai mythology. Dishes like the Ocean & Flora salad highlight the menu’s two strong suits: premium produce and botanical flavors. Elsewhere, weary staples like green curry are dressed up with spherified pearls of coconut milk.

Chope’s pick: Dancing King Prawns

Peppina (Sukhumvit 33)

The original branch of this rapidly expanding pizzeria aims high: it wants to be the purveyor of the most authentic Neapolitan pizza in Bangkok, and recently proved itself when it received official certification from the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana in Naples. As a result, a massive pizza oven dominates the warm-yet-industrial-style dining room, which boasts an open kitchen and its very own Neapolitan baker. Also popular with diners are the pasta dishes, fresh salads and excellent beef steak.

The Never Ending Summer

With its warehouse vibe and prime riverside location within The Jam Factory, which also houses a gallery space, architects offices and book store, this kitchen dishes out food made from starchitect Duangrit Bunnag's family Thai recipes, many of which are not very common at all. Make sure you try their nam prik (chili paste), which we find very impressive and deep in flavor. Plus, it's served with a big tray of local vegetables like pak good and pak plang.

Chope’s pick: Watermelon with dried fish flakes (Pla Haeng Taeng-Mo)

The Summer House Project

The team behind The Never Ending Summer’s nestled in a newly built space just next door to the original restaurant. Head chef Nakul Kavinrat rolls out comforting Western favorites on a menu overrun by seafood dishes like The Fisherman’s Stew (a tomato-based seafood soup, B240), crab cakes with slaw and beer-battered fish and chips, while still leaving some space for other staples like Caesar salad with apple and glazed walnuts and penne carbonara with roasted red pepper. Celebrity chef Phol Tantasathien takes care of the dessert menu here.

Chope’s pick: Grilled Lamb Loin Chops with Pesto

VOGUE Lounge

This cocktail bar serves more than just expensive drinks by a highly regarded Japanese mixologist. They’ve also brought onboard a Michelin-star-winning chef, Vincent Thierry, formerly of Caprice in Hong Kong, to create a menu of incredibly elegant (and equally delicious) small plates such as wagyu sirloin with black truffle potato and bone marrow butter. The 1920s-inspired bar features a small indoor area dominated by plum leather, bronze and marble, while outside is a beautiful air-conditioned terrace.

Chope’s pick: Duck Foie Gras Cones

Hyde & Seek Gastro Bar

The lure of the Hyde & Seek gastro bar is its ability to be both warm and inviting, while exotic and mysterious. The same cozy brunch spot with strong drinks becomes a dark, mysterious and club-esque restaurant once nightfall arrives. No matter when you visit, though, the chili chocolate glazed baby back ribs are a must-order, along with a unique tipple from the bartender’s list of specials.

Chope’s pick: FOIE GRAS & WAGYU Burger
