11 of the best new Thai restaurants this year
From rustic classics to fine dining, it’s been a pretty good year so far
One of Chantaburi’s favorite restaurants has finally opened in Bangkok. It goes heavy on the Thai vibes with traditional backrest pillows, dark wood tables and Southern food served in little bamboo baskets that will drum up childhood memories for most Thais. Hit up the Thai sushi set (B150) that’s packed with fresh prawns, crayfish, crab, Thai mackerel and squid—served alongside vinegar-flavored rice and spicy seafood sauce. For drinks, go for the the hard-to-find nam ma peed (B75), which boasts very refreshing sweet and sour flavors.
62 Sukhumvit Soi 33, 095-849-2629. Open Tue-Sun 11am-10:30pm. BTS Phrom Phong
The owner of popular ice cream shop Iberry turns the focus to cafe culture at this greenhouse-inspired hideaway. Here, it’s all about dishes with a Thai twist, like the Floral Summer Rolls (Vietnamese-style fresh rolls stuffed with grilled pork and edible flowers like butterfly peas) or the fall-off-bone lamb leg in spicy Moroccan-style massaman served with roti. If you are not feeling some curry-based fire, just get the anchan and rose milk tea, which is sweet and creamy from rose syrup and milk.

While Nahm has the authenticity, Le Du the French technique and Sra Bua the molecular stuff, this spot from Team Issaya pitches itself somewhere between the three, with 10-course tasting menus at the fixed price of B1,950 featuring exotic Thai dishes like the fermented beef salads, crab fat dips, grilled pork neck and spicy-sour soups in delicate tasting portions that we’re confident compete with the top tier of Bangkok fine dining. Teetotalers will love the local tea pairing (B680), though the wine list is also superb.
