The China House

The interior here is inspired by 1930’s Shanghai, when the Art Deco design movement was hitting its stride, which means the dining room is all about dark, hidden spaces accented by bold splashes of color. But it’s the food that keeps customers coming back since most dishes are prepared a la minute. Opt for the unlimited dim sum menu (B888++) features fresh and aromatic dishes like black truffle xiao long bao (meat and broth filled dumplings), scallop and pork dumplings topped with fish roe, and cabbage roll filled with chicken meat and Hokkaido abalone served with Yunnan gravy.

G/F Mandarin Oriental, Charoenkrung soi 40, 02-659-9000#7390. Open Tue-Sun 11:30am-2:30pm, 6-10:30pm.

Din Tai Fung

It’s very easy to go gaga over Din Tai Fung, perhaps because of its location on the top floor of CentralWorld or the perfectly formed, thin-skinned Shanghai-style Xiao Long Bao that arrives to your table still billowing smoke. Other highlights are just as good, such as the lean and Sliced Duck in Crispy Spring Onion Pastry, Fragrant Pork with Crushed Garlic, and Oriental Wantons with Black Vinegar & Chilli Oil.

7/F, CentralWorld, Ratchadamri Rd., 02-646-1282. BTS Chidlom

Ho Kitchen

Step inside this spacious dining venue with a scenic view of Chao Praya river to indulge in traditional Chinese cuisines made of fresh produce as well as fresh seafood. Highlights included the likes of braised abalone with oyster sauce and stir-fried Boston lobsters in gravy (B5,500). The dim sum offering here is just as good, we recommend steamed shumai with abalone (B220), turnip cake with XO sauce (B120), and steamed salted egg custard buns (B100/3 pieces).

95/426 Rama3 Road, 02-294-5500. Open daily 11am-2:30pm and 5-10:30pm.

Hong Bao

Unlike many other Chinese restaurants, Hong Bao serves its dim sum, which is some of the best in town, all day. Must-try dishes include steamed rice rolls with crispy shrimp (B120) whose the fluffy rice roll and crunchy shrimp go great with the well-mixed dark soy sauce, and the superb salapao lava (golden salted egg bun, B85) that manages a wonderful balance between creaminess and salty egg yolk. You can’t go wrong with the peking duck (B1,200), either. This one comes with a signature sauce made using duck stock—giving a pungent brown color and sweet notes.

104 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 092-273-5242. Open Mon-Fri 11am-2:30pm, 5:30-10pm; Sat-Sun 10:30am-10pm

Man Fu Yuan Kitchen

Hidden up in the eaves of EmQuartier’s Helix Quartier dining zone, the restaurant approximates its main branch’s exclusive feel through tufted booths, floral-patterned chairs and decorative ceramics. The kitchen is a notch above, too, excelling in flavors and texture. We love the pork and shrimp siew mai (Chinese dumplings, B195/6 pieces) with thin-skinned and XO sauce on top for a pungent kick, and soy sauce-laden chee cheong fun with crispy shrimp (B195/6 pieces) that comes with a soft, springy rice-noodle exterior, crunchy center.

8/F, Emquartier, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-003-6240. Open daily 10am-10pm

Man Ho

Occupied an elegant and spacious dining room on the second floor of the JW Marriott, the restaurant serves up impressive Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine. Opt for the all-you-can-eat dim sum (B1,500), which will have you gorging on shrimp and spinach dumplings, steamed bean curd rolls served with abalone sauce, and Man Ho fried rice with Chinese ham, dried scallops, and crab meat. In a hurry? Order the Shanghai noodles with seafood and garlic chilli sauce (B550) for a quick yet satisfying lunch meal.

2/F JW Marriott, 4 Sukhumvit soi 2, 02-656-7700. Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm, 6-10:30pm. BTS Ploenchit

Mei Jiang

Mei Jiang is one of the most elegant spots for Chinese cuisine in Bangkok with its timeless and cream-toned decor. Despite the elegant establishment overlooking the Chao Phraya River offering authentic Cantonese fare, dishes like stir-fried Phuket lobster with egg white, crab coral, and green asparagus (B3,800) burst with creativity. Our favorites include deep-fried crab claw with crunchy minced shrimp in honey and lime sauce (B600), and steamed snow fish with shallots and chili sauce (B1,200).

G/F, The Peninsula Bangkok, 333 Charoen Nakhon Rd., 02-020-2888. Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm, 6-10:30pm

Pagoda

An upscale Chinese restaurant serving Cantonese cuisine that manages to stay innovative whilst also embracing age-old cooking techniques—think classic chicken beggar and sticky rice with crab. The pagoda-inspired ceiling and colorful lacquered tiles evoke the timeless grace and elegance of the Middle Kingdom. For dim sum, we like the garlic chives and aromatic prawn dumplings (150) with a nice crunchy texture, steamed dumplings filled with pork, shrimp, and shiitake mushrooms (B130), and deep-fried soybean donuts (B120).

4/F Marriott Marquis, Sukhumvit Soi 22, 02-059-5555. Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm, 6-10pm. BTS Phrom Phong

Sui Sian Chinese Restaurant

This renowned Chinese restaurant offers authentic Cantonese cuisine through a la carte and set menus made using recipes from a handful of award-winning chefs from Hong Kong, which include varieties of dim sum. Sui Sian also presides over private dining rooms for up to 8 people and a large private room for up to 20 diners.

10/F The Landmark Bangkok, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-254-0404. Open Mon-Sat 11:30am-2:30pm and 6-10:30pm; Sun 11am-3pm and 6-10:30pm

Tim Ho Wan

Aside from the affordable price and convenient location inside Terminal21, regulars come to this Michelin-starred restaurant for its famous pork bun (B120/3 pieces) which comes with immense flavor from roasted pork in barbecue sauce and the crisp, sweet bun. Classic dishes are done right, like the soft, mildly tangy pan fried radish cake (B100), pork and shrimp shumai (B120) and har gow (shrimp dumpling, B130).

3/F, Terminal 21, Sukhumvit Soi 21, 02-006-5288. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Asoke
