After over a year of discussion and steady construction, The Commons Saladaeng is nearly ready to open its doors to the public.

 

Soft opening in mid-January on leafy Sala Daeng Soi 1, the community mall was designed by Department of Architecture (DEPT), the same firm that helped develop its sister venue in Thonglor. Expect a lot of the same design principles that run through that space, plus some touches that pay homage to Sala Daeng’s history, like the striking red roof (the district owes its name to a red-roofed pavilion that stood in contrast to the area’s rice paddies back in the Rama V era). The highlight, however, might be the towering banyan tree the firm was able to keep intact.

 

There are three floors—the ground, the market and the platform, a multipurpose space intended for community use—and plenty of outdoor and communal areas. Over 20 vendors are moving in, including familiar names from The Commons Thonglor like Roast, Roots, Seven Suns and The Lobster Lab, as well as some fresh faces. Those include Internet-breaking Bun Meat & Cheese, Yumcha and the third outlet of Angus Zou’s Draft Land, a bar promising next-level cocktails on draft that’s being overseen by The Rabbit Hole’s Suwincha “Chacha” Singsuwan and company.

 

By about February, when the mall should be up and running, expect classes, workshops and events for the whole family, including your dog—The Commons Saladaeng is pet-friendly.
