The Singapore Chinese Film Festival is back with lots of edgy titles
Plus: old classics and a retrospective on Taiwanese filmmaker Lee Hsing.
There's yet another film festival coming to town. This year's edition of Singapore Chinese Film Festival has a dedicated retrospective on great Taiwanese Chinese-language filmmaker Lee Hsing, with 11 titles spanning his 30-year career. Highlights include 1963 film Our Neighbors about 1960s outcasts in a Taiwanese slum, as well as The Heroic Pioneers, a story about early Southeast Chinese immigrants settling down in Taiwan.
Also showing are a selection of contemporary documentaries, shorts and feature-length films like Wan Jen's It Takes Two to Tango, a taboo love story about a Beijinger and a Taiwanese, Taiwanese-Burmese film Ice Poison about poor farmers lured into selling crystal meth, and documentary My Voice My Life by Oscar winner Ruby Yang, which chronicles the hardships of underprivileged students attempting to stage a musical.
The film fest starts Apr 17 and runs through the end of the month. Get your tickets through Sistic.
