Paradise of Thorns

Grossing over B100 million and continuing to be the current box office top dog for more than three weeks since its release, “Paradise of Thorns” follows an unmarried gay couple, Thongkam and Saeng, as they build a durian farm together. But the course of Thongkam’s life is altered after his partner’s sudden death. Since the film took place before the Marriage Equality bill passed, Thongkam had to fight Saeng’s family to lay claim on the fruits of his labor.

Maintaining its status as the highest grossing Thai film of 2024, the tearjerker “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” is finally available to stream on Netflix for those who might have missed it during its original release in Songkran season. A tale close to Asian familial dynamic, the film explores concepts such as filial piety and patriarchy through the story of Em, a university drop out who began taking care of his cancer-ridden grandmother, in hopes of gaining her inheritance.

Based on the gothic novella Camilla by Sheridan Le Fanu “Blood Rain” is a little over an hour horror animation by up and coming director Achitaphon Piansukprasert. If you know anything about the source of inspiration, we’re guessing it will involve an atmospheric clandestine nature with some blood sucking creatures.

Director Chookiat Sakveerakul, who previously brought hits like “Love of Siam” and “13 Sins,” is dipping his toes in sci-fi territory with his latest offering. “Taklee Genesis” talks about Stella, a single mom who traveled back to her childhood home only to receive a message from her father who mysteriously disappeared in a forbidden forest 30 years ago. This kickstarted her odyssey, traversing through over 1,000 years of time and space.

Luang Pee Teng Comeback

The wait is finally over! The comedy franchise “Luang Pee Teng (aka. The Holy Man)” is having a comeback after its 19-year hiatus. The fifth installment will be bringing back the old gang like director Note Chern-Yim and Thai comedian Theng Therdtherng who will be reprising his titular role as monk Teng. The story will pick up after the monk’s two decade pilgrimage to Tibet as Teng returns home to solve issues in his hometown.
