It’s not all sad news for cinephiles in Bangkok. 

While alternative cinema Bangkok Screening Room is concluding its run and closing at the end of March, yesterday came word that the movie house won’t be demolished but handed over to a tenant at the fore of serious films in the capital, the Documentary Club. 

“We’re delighted to introduce you to a new tenant at the Woof Pack building, who is a familiar face to many local cinephiles and well known for their documentary film expertise,” Bangkok Screening Room announced. “This handover means that Bangkok still has an independent cinema and movie lovers can still enjoy a variety of film programs present to you by the Doc Club team!”

Documentary Club founder Thida Plitpolkarnpim said the move resulted from her regretting the loss of another quality cinema was calling quits.

“I admit that I’m not confident whether I can run it as well as Bangkok Screening Room did, but I’ll do my best in every capacity,” Thida said after Bangkok Screening Room’s announcement.

According to Thida, the venue will be lightly modified to fit Documentary Club’s direction with more details to be announced at a later date.

Bangkok Screening Room opened with 52 seats in Sep 2016. It’s located on the second floor of the Woof Pack Building on Soi Sala Daeng 1, reachable from BTS Sala Daeng exit No. 4 or MRT Lumphini’s exit No. 2.
