The Faculty of Arts’ Department of Dramatic Arts of Chulalongkorn University brings back their annual Chula International Film Festival 2013 with 9 award-winning films from 9 countries all over the world. Feb 1. Breathing (Austria, 2011): Audience Award winner at the 2010 American Film Institute Awards and Europa Cinemas Label at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Prisoner Roman Kogler is sent to work at the municipal morgue in Vienna. One day, he finds a dead girl who shares his family name, making him question his past.
Feb 4. Beasts of the Southern Wild (US, 2012): Grand Jury Prize at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and Camera d’or winner at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. After her hot-tempered father, Wink, falls seriously ill, 6-year-old Hushpuppy has to cope with many natural disasters while searching for her long lost mother.
Feb 6. The Imposter (UK, 2012): Best Documentary winner at the 2012 British Independent Film Awards. The documentary focuses on a young French man who convinces a family in Texas that he is their son who went missing three years ago.
Feb 8. 36 (Thailand, 2011): New Current Award winner from the 2012 Busan International Film Festival. Thai independent filmmaker Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit’s film questions whether memory exists when there’s no longer any evidence through the story of two photographers, Sai and Oum, who work on the same film production, before Oum quits and Sai loses all the photos on her hard disk.
Feb 11. Guilty of Romance (Japan, 2011): Nominated for Best Director at 2012 Asian Film Awards. Police investigations link a murder in the love hotel district of Shibuya, Tokyo, to Izumi, the wife of a famous romance novelist, who escapes her monotonous life to work as a nude model and prostitute.
Feb 13. Circumstance (Iran, 2011): Best Feature Film at the 2011 New York Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and Audience Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Atafeh and her brother Mehran, a recovering drug addict, hail from a wealthy family in Tehran. Their tight relationship collapses as Atafeh grows closer to her best female friend Shireen.
Feb 15. A Royal Affair (Denmark, 2012): Silver Berlin Bear winner from 2012 Berlin International Film Festival. Married to a mentally unstable king, a young queen has a secret affair with the king’s physician with whom she plots a revolutionary plan that will change the country forever.
Discussion sessions will be held after each screening hosted by veteran film critics Kong Rithdee (Bangkok Post) and Kittisak Suvannapokhin (Season Magazine).
