After kicking off the year with the sci-fi thriller The Bay and the long-awaited LA crime thriller Gangster Squad, here are some more blockbusters to keep an eye out for. Arnold Schwarzenegger makes his long-awaited return to the big screen as a small-town sheriff resigned to fighting petty crime after leaving the LAPD but called back in to help bring down a notorious drug kingpin in The Last Stand (expected in theaters Jan 17). Just a month later, another action veteran, Sylvester Stallone, returns as a hitman who forms an alliance with a DC cop to track down a common enemy in Bullet to the Head (Feb 7). Next it’s superhero time: Marvel Studios rolls out Iron Man 3 (May 2) while Warner Brother Studios reboots their main man with the story of Superman’s origins in Man of Steel (Jun 13). Several other big-name franchises are also set to return, including G.I Joe: Retaliation (Mar 28) and The Fast and the Furious 6 (May). After getting up to all sorts of shenanigans in Bangkok last time out, The Wolfpack will be headed to some other far-off land in The Hangover 3. Details are still sketchy but the film is expected to be out around the end of May. If it’s fantasy adventure you seek, then Walt Disney Pictures delivers with its adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Oz the Great and Powerful (April), starring James Franco, Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis. For something more grounded in reality there’s Les Miserables (Jan 31), starring Anne Hathaway and Huge Jackman, based on the musical that is based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel. And finally, in another highly anticipated book adaptation, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel set during the 1920s prohibition era gets the gaudy Baz Luhrmann treatment (think Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge) in the The Great Gatsby (May).
