With 2011 at an end, we take a sneak peak forward and try to spot what will be next year’s hot flicks. First up, calendar-wise, is the multi-award winning Iranian family drama A Separation (Jan 19). The Golden Berlin Bear Award winner tells the story of a married couple forced to make a difficult decision: move overseas to improve the life of their child or stay in Iran and look after a parent suffering with Alzheimer. Also in January there’s the much hyped Moneyball (Jan 26) which is a baseball biopic about Oakland A’s team manager Billy Beane and his means of achieving success through statistics. Sounds dull right? But then again it does star Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill and is co-written by the West Wing’s Aaron Sorkin. Someone with a rather weaker movie track record, Madonna takes a second stab at directing with the drama, W.E. (Feb 9), focused on the romance between King Edward VIII and Wallis American divorcee Wallis Simpson. More romance and tears, this time from Japan, with the third episode of Always: Sunset on Third Street (Mar 22) continuing the inter weaving stories of a community living in one street in Tokyo. Not surprisingly Hollywood continues its obsession with superhero franchises in 2012 and after the Dark Knight in 2008 we’re most excited by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises out on Jul 16 with Christian Bale back as the badass Batman. In another case of Hollywood borrowing from comic books, The Avengers will also be launched on May 3 and features a hot team of superhumans brought together to help save the Earth. Creative genius Tim Burton returns to our screens with a black and white animation about the boy who unexpectedly lost his dog, Frankenweenie, on Oct 18. Finally, The Twilight Saga (thankfully) comes to an end with Breaking Dawn Part 2, scheduled to be in theaters on Nov 15.
