It has been our pleasure to give you the interviews you want, the guides you need, and weekend roundups that make every week in Bangkok special. Nobu may be one of the most popular openings of 2024, and they’re certainly putting on a big shindig for the New Year, but the buzz was already going earlier this year when Robert De Niro came to Bangkok to promote the opening. At a press roundtable on the 53rd floor of Empire Tower today, Robert De Niro, two-time Oscar-winner and one of the minds behind the visionary Nobu Hospitality concept, showed up with Chef Nobu Matsuhisa to introduce Bangkok to the highest Nobu ever.
This city loves to cut a rug. This year saw parties involving hundreds learning to Bachata, voguing with some of the city’s drag royalty, swing dancers touring the city, and more. This piece is a fulsome list of where to learn to dance, where to take your sweetheart for a proper night of tripping the light fantastic, and people trying to make a space for dance as an art in the city—from traditional Thai to hip-hop.
Michelin announced their freshest list for Bangkok’s finest eats, and as a shock, the country got its first ever three Michelin star restaurant. In a tearful acceptance speech, Supaksorn 'Ice' Jongsiri brought home Thailand’s very first three star restaurant in Sorn. The story became international news, ensuring two things: 1) Bangkok will forever be known as one of the world’s greatest dining cities and 2) we’ll probably never get another table at Sorn.
BK went all out for International Women’s Day. Trailblazers, dancers, entrepreneurs, photographers BK spoke to the inspiring women in Thailand who are opening doors for future generations. This year, we will hear from Chef Pam, DJ Nakadia, designer Pipatchara, ballerina Ommi, swing dancer Young Ji, filmmaker Thapanee, creative director Pornthip, photographer Jutharat, and activist Emilie about their advice for having a good work-life balance.
On shelves for Pride Month in Bangkok, this piece was a heavily researched article exploring the complexities and the evolution of queer cinema in Bangkok—from the very early days of a 13-minute silent short film to modern blockbusters tearing down stereotypes. The journey for Thai queer cinema has courted controversy and changed the minds and hopes of many.
Thailand’s “Golden Boy” was finally returned to Thailand this year. The statue is a small but unique 11th century treasure depicting a standing 43-centimeter Shiva in giltcopper with silver inlay. BK tracked the wild journey of this statue and looked into the groups who are trying to bring Thailand’s historic treasures back into the Kingdom.
We did a version of this mid-year, and you loved it so much we fleshed it out for the rest of 2024. These are the hot new restaurants that have opened since the beginning of 2024—a list for every type of foodie. BK is serving up New Orleans fare, hot new ramen specialties, homemade ‘za, and more. Whether you were looking for fine dining or a good burger, BK was there for you the whole year.
A feature of BK Magazine’s “Wild Bangkok” issue in April—which also featured plenty of reptiles, whales, and creepy crawlies—birdwatching became a big deal during Covid, and now the city wants to know where to find their Asian openbills and Malay firebacks. But birdwatching isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about looking for life in a chaotic world and finding that zen birder spirit.
It was a crazy year for concerts, and BK was your go-to for all the latest live show news. We ended the year with Rolling Loud and the mega-event Maho Rasop—then on to Wonderfruit. While this list may be over, fear not, because with Green Day returning (finally) and Kylie Minogue already announcing a show for 2025, next year is shaping up to be quite a show too.
The breakfast issue is a big deal to us at BK. You love it. We love it. And we do it every year. This year, we found a host of new picks from hidden and cheap morning snacks from Myanmar to American-themed diners doing PB&J milkshakes.
