Kanjana Handmade
Launched in 2012, Kanjana Handmade is a mother and daughter project that creates modern-meets-traditional fashion items. Loose, easy-to-wear jersey dresses are hand-dyed using natural colors. Products range from tie-dye maxi dresses (B1,600) to handbags (from B1,700). There is also a new home décor line which includes pillow cases coming out soon. The family is based in Chiang Mai but often appears at the Bangkok Farmers’ Market.
Mae Teeta
After learning traditional Thai indigo dying techniques from her mother, Praphaiphan Daengchai, a native of Sakol Nakorn province,
founded this famous business back in 1992. In collaboration with Thinkk Studio, the brand has grown to include more modern designs for dresses, T-shirts and accessories like placemats and napkins. The next collection will be launched at the beginning of 2015. Prices start from B800 for indigo vest.
Walk on the Wild Side
Officially established in 2009, this is the tie-dye project of Narawut Chaichompoo and Zazima Assavet, a couple who quit their day jobs to rejuvenate Narawut’s family textile business. The shop offers basic T-shirts, jersey dresses and kids’ T-shirts, all of which the couple hand-dyes piece by piece. Prices start from B680 per T-shirt.
Studio Naenna
Studio Naennha is one of five local projects selected to join TCDC’s first Chiang Mai Design Week (Dec 6-14). Founded by Thailand-based Patricia Cheesman, the studio works closely with local Chiang Mai producers to create hand-woven contemporary designs using natural dyes. Products include dresses, scarves and home décor items. The project is currently based in Chiang Mai, but expect to see products in Bangkok during the Baan Lae Suan Fair and other markets. Prices start from B1,000 for scarf.
Dye-it-Yourself: Tie-dye workshop at Charm-Lern Studio
Nestled in Bangkok’s old town, Charm- Learn Studio is the brainchild of Silapakorn graduates Thanita “Maii” Yothawong, Chanchai “Bub” Boriboon and Natthapol “Mick” Wannaporn, who offer workshops on ceramics, photography and fabric dyeing. On Dec 6-7, the Indigo Dye workshop is priced at B4,00 per person, while the Natural Dye workshop on Dec 13-14 costs B3,000 per person. Reserve your spot at 080-587-6331.
