8 old-school cool barbershops in Singapore
Be it pompadour, a straight shave or a manicure, you'll find it here.
A multi-concept barbershop in the likes of Hounds of the Baskervilles and The Panic Room (no surprise, though—founders Yanto Aryan Sani and Mohamed Jay Anudin were pioneer groomers from the two establishments), this handsome spot has all the oligatory industrial touches (metal toolboxes, Chesterfield sofa and vintage lightings), with a musical slant: pictures of bands from the ninties and electric guitars grace the walls, and there are merchanise from local bands and the occasional acoustic sets.
Named after the Sherlock Holmes story, The Hound of the Baskervilles, this charming collective of Australia-trained barbers sometimes double up as professional tattoo artists. Get a magnificently dapper makeover here with immaculate haircuts ($35), straight razor shaves and even facial hair grooming and shaping services (around $15 upwards).
This fancy six-chaired grooming parlor, helmed by master barber Luke Strickland from London, offers services including the standard hot towel shave, haircut and shampoo, plus the not-so-standard mani-pedi, eyebrow grooming and waxing. The barbershop, which also has a stage for live acts, a private room for meetings and a bar, uses and retails products from D.R. Harris, alongside the sale of goods from brands like Layrite and The Daimon Barber.
Previously located at 62 Neil Road, The Panic Room has since moved to a new shophouse space in Geylang. Haircuts range from $25 to $35, while wet shaves will set you back $35. You can also purchase grooming products like pomades, hair tonic and combs, from over 42 cult brands like The Bluebeard's Revenge, JS Sloane and Bees Knees.
The staff at this American-style barber assess your scalp before cutting your hair, brush you off with powder after, and neaten your hair edges with a straight razor shave. Following that, they apply hot towels on your face and neck, and give you a neck massage. Plus, they also provide hot foam shaves ($35), among other services. This premium cut starts from just $45—you can’t say no to that.
Head to this polished, industrial-fitted space for classic wet shaves and haircuts—all services boast a disciplined, true-to-tradition approach that comes with quite the price (a basic shave is $40 while a haircut starts from $48). If you need a skin fix, opt for the Sultan’s Shave ($60), which throws in a mini facial to keep skin fresh and clean. You can also buy a range of grooming products from labels including Baxter of California, Pankhurst and American Crew.
This quintessentially English salon is housed in a pre-war shophouse space that's decked in Timothy Oulton furniture, dark wood panels, marble counter tops and sleek barbershop chairs clad in sexy black leather. The hair services here, which cost anything from $40-88, don’t come cheap. But as traditional barbershops go, a lot of work is put into that spiffy haircut, traditional hot towel wet shave and even shampoo session, so you might find that the experience is worth all that coin.
This store on Eng Hoon Street offers a mélange of services including haircuts, shaves, hair removal (on almost every part of the body imaginable), color and even semi-permanent brow enhancement, with prices ranging from $15-1,500. We also like its grungy, retro-inspired decor.
