Bangkok’s classic 50-year-old khao man gai institution, Go-Ang Pratunam, is heading to Singapore. 

The Singapore branch, the brand's first foreign foray, is managed by The Minor Food Group Singapore, the same team that looks after ThaiExpress and Xin Wang Hong Kong Cafe. It will open on Oct 20 at Serangoon mall, Nex, and go by the name Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice. 

What started out as a low-key food stall in 1960 at Bangkok’s Pratunam area received the Michelin Bib Gourmand award in last year's debut Bangkok guide. Nowadays, the restaurant causes dramatic queues spilling onto the footpath for its must-try dish known for its fatty rice and pungent sauces. 

How will the Thai version of Hainanese chicken rice, which retails here for B40-60, fare in the land of chicken rice and high prices? We'll have to wait and see. 

However, Go-Ang Pratunam's not the only Thai institution to expand to Singapore recently. Foodland's 24-hour Thai restaurant chain, Took Lae Dee, opened its first foreign outlet in the industrial estate of Tai Seng earlier this year, and casual bistro Baan Ying now dishes out Thai comfort food with the occasional fusion twist in an artfully modern space at Royal Square Novena.
