TripAdvisor just revealed its list of the world's best restaurants—and Chiang Mai makes the top 10
Forget the usual suspects.
Ubiquitous travel review website TripAdvisor has just revealed its list of the world's 25 best fine-dining restaurants—and, against the odds perhaps, Chiang Mai makes the top 10.
Slotting in at #10 on the list is David's Kitchen, the Chiang Mai eatery belonging to London-hailing chef David Gordon and his wife Prom.
The cozy eatery on Bumrangrad Road—whose website announces "You will arrive at David’s Kitchen as hungry as a stranger. You leave as satisfied as a family friend"—is no stranger to popular acclaim, regularly featuring at the pointy end of TripAdvisor's annual Thailand lists.
Its set menus start at B1,450 for four courses, which might yield you pan-European fare like a salad starter of salmon gravlax or a main of beef bourguignon with Paris mash, served up with patented unstuffy service.
According to TripAdvisor's users—responsible for some 600 million reviews between them—Au Crocodile in Strasbourg, France, is the world's absolute best place for fine dining in 2018.
The fine-dining award is just one part of Tripadvisor's annual Travelers' Choice Awards, covering everything from airlines to "experiences."
While Thai restaurants are now recognized in the Michelin Guide and Asia's 50 Best, both those prestigious lists have been criticized of upholding the status quo. In that respect, this TripAdvisor list could be seen as a breath of fresh air: real people having their say about real restaurants.
On the other hand, consumer groups say that fake reviews are a growing problem on TripAdvisor and other user-generated review websites.
We'll leave it to your discerning tastes.
