Huge night for Singapore at the Asia's 50 Best Restaurants awards
Two beloved local chefs finally made the list. Plus other good news.
It was the big annual San Pellegrino/Acqua Panna Asia's 50 Best Restaurants announcement last night, and we're excited to report that there was lots of excitement for Singapore. Alongside our enduring heavy-hiters like Andre, Les Amis, Waku Ghin and Jaan, two Singaporean chefs made their debut on the list.
Jason Tan's Corner House entered the list at an admirable #17, and longtime institution Wild Rocket by Willin Low at #38. Corner House opened in July 2014 at the Botanic Gardens and has since gone from strength to strength with its French sensibility and "gastro-botanica" cuisine. Willin Low reopened his mod-Sin restaurant on Mt Emily after an eight-month hiatus back in 2014.
Also exciting: Restaurant Andre went up two spots from last year's #5 to become among Asia's top three restaurants, alongside Bangkok's Gaggan (#1 second year in a row) and Tokyo's Narisawa (#2). Waku Ghin made the top 10 again, up to #6.
Also, also exciting: Cheryl Koh of Les Amis and Tarte became Asia's Best Pastry Chef last night
With a few notable exceptions, Singapore contenders improved their rankings over 2015: Les Amis (up one to #12), last year's new arrival Burnt Ends, which climbed a whopping 16 spots to #14, Shinji by Kanesawa (up 11 to #21) and Tippling Club (up five spots to #31).
Singapore's overall tally on the Asia's 50 Best list remained the same, as Osteria Mozza and Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck fell off the list. Jaan took a tumble from last year's #11 to #29, after the departure of chef Julien Royer who now heads new National Gallery darling Odette, which incidentally we hope to see on this list very soon. Iggy's also took a major dip, down 18 spots to #36.
