8 awesome Mexican restaurants to get your Cinco de Mayo celebrations started
You never need an excuse to eat good Mexican food, but this is a pretty good one
Dominated by a painting of the iconic Day of the Dead female figure with a skeleton mask, this is one of the most characterful kiosks in The Commons’ market zone. It's operated by a self-taught chef from Mexico city who turns out authentic native dishes from her family’s recipes, like the chalupitas de chorizo (B240/3 pieces), a mouthwateringly salty morsel of homemade chorizo and beans atop flaky corn tortillas. For booze, try a cocktail with cucumber and jalapeno pepper (B260), whose taste spicy yet refreshing.
The Commons, Thonglor Soi 17, 092-331-5203. Open daily noon-11pm. BTS Thong Lo
Themed after Frida Kahlo’s house in Mexico City, the setting is casual yet lively thanks to wall paintings and brightly-colored art pieces. As the food sticks to Mexican comfort dishes with some little twists like nachos and burritos with smoked pork and grilled chicken as fillings. We like the generously portioned fajita set (B450) with juicy carne asada (grilled and seared beef), six flour tortillas and mountains of Spanish rice and refried beans. This is an excellent choice for group gatherings.
2/23 Phahon Yothin Soi 7 (Ari), 02-619-5107. Open daily 11am-midnight. BTS Ari
This restaurant is packing some serious fireworks and manages to do so at super affordable prices. With your first bite, probably into a homemade corn tortilla chip dipped in guacamole (B165), it becomes clear that La Monita’s food is not just comforting; it’s exciting. The burritos (B260-B510) taste complex, with its luscious cream, brilliant guacamole and tender steak. Our favorite is the Mexican-style soft corn tacos with filling options of fish, beef and shrimp (B150/piece) which are perfectly seasoned with plenty of coriander, lime and onion.
7/F EmQuartier, Sukhumvit Rd., 02 003 6238. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Phrom Phong

This Bangkok offshoot of Sydney-born restaurant Mejico does away with Mexican restaurant cliches and instead goes for a cosmopolitan, cocktail-bar kind of feel. There's a huge drink menu here featuring over 40 labels of tequila and mezcal (ranging from B120-B1,900/shot) and cocktails like the signature margarita (B250), which tastes like a pina colada-margarita hybrid thanks to El Jimador blanco tequila, mango, coconut and pandan. If you want to dig into something more heavy, try the roasted whole chili (B185)—a chili con carne with rice and decadent taste from chorizo sausage.
2/F Groove @ CentralWorld, Rama 1 Rd., 02-252-6660. Open daily 11am-midnight; Fri-Sat 11-1am. BTS Siam
The inside features bright orange walls and colorful flags dangling. Head chef Carlos Bravo presents classic Mexican specialties including freshly smashed guacamole with corn tortillas (B350) and striploin fajitas (B375) served with onion, straw potato and avocado. We especially like the thick, six-hour-braised Angus beef ribs (B650), which come smothered in pumpkin-seedy, flavorful green mole sauce. For sweets, choose between pastel de tres leches (B150), a traditional Mexican milk cake, or flan de coco (B150)—coconut cream cake with roasted pineapple and strawberry sorbet.

With its low-key charm, tasty grub and relaxed service, Tacos & Salsa is suited to a quick in-and-out meal or a long night with friends. Order the peach margarita (B170) to sip while waiting for comfort food like the set of five salsas (B40), which covers the classic tomatoes and onion, to the considerably hotter salsa verde and garlic chili and oil that tastes like namprikpao, or the nachos (B125/B250) served with a generous portion of beans, cheese and chunky jalapenos.
21/3 Sukhumvit Soi 18, 02-663-6366. Open daily 11am-11pm. BTS Asok
Nestled in a garden down the surprisingly peaceful Thonglor soi 7, the food here is so good that we highly recommend booking ahead. The two Mexican brothers that run the place serve up traditional Mexican cuisine like the carnitas (B280)—corn tortillas topped with pork fried in lard, orange, beer and spices. To drink, choose between the cinnamon-topped pisco sours (B300) and the horchata (B80)—a non-dairy rice drink—that can also be served with rum.

This restaurant is a trendy blend of Mexican booze, street art and hip hop tunes. The substantial food offering adds twists to traditional fare, like the signature elotes callejeros (B150)—grilled corn on the cob with chipotle mayo, cotija cheese and lime—and the roast duck and seared foie gras tacos (B350), whose textures and flavors come together deliciously. For drinks, try the La Condesa (B295) which is a mix of oak barrel-aged tequila, Mancino vermouth, Cynar artichoke liqueur and grenadine.
