Looking to capture the clandestine feel of 1920s prohibition era New York, Scalini is decked out in dark tones with lots of nooks and corners in which to hide from prying eyes. The brightly-lit open kitchen features a wood-fired oven and gives guests the chance to interact directly with the chef and perhaps even learn a little about the art of pasta making. Mains include vegetarian eggplant risotto with creamy ricotta cheese and fresh basil leaves, Andaman Sea-caught red snapper with Moroccan spices, and a silky seafood spaghetti packed with shrimp, mussels, clams, and tangy capers. The compact dessert menu, which includes items like the signature cannoli stuffed with mascarpone and berries, also shines. There is a decent selection of wines and spirits on offer, ranging from affordable import labels to pricey special-night-out bottles.

The cooking boasts of contemporary but approachable techniques, using European, local and seasonal ingredients to put together a scintillating five and seven course menu.
