Everything from classic durian to banoffee, XO sauce and Georgian melon flavors.

Just like that, mooncake season is upon us yet again (we know, it’s almost September already?!). We’ve been doing our fair share of mooncake sampling—or rather indulging—and have been thoroughly impressed by the sheer variety and quality of mooncakes this year. Here are the best of the best.

Banyan Tree Bangkok

Packaged in a gorgeous mint green box celebrating Banyan Tree's 25th anniversary, these mooncakes are pressed with a tree logo, shaped in a wooden mold and then baked. Boxes hold two or four cakes and come in two shades of green. Flavors include durian, lotus seed, walnut, jujubee, and mixed grains and herbs. Unique to Banyan Tree are cakes filled with sweet and salty XO sauce.

Where to find them: Banyan Tree, 21/100 South Sathorn Rd.; Central Food Hall (Central Chidlom Branch and Central World Branch); Tops Market (Central Rama 3 Branch); Siam Paragon Department Store; The Mall Bang Khae Department Store; The EmQuartier Department Store

Centara Grand

Centara adheres to traditional tastes, while also offering a huge selection, with nine different fillings in a rainbow of flavors—yellow durian, red bean paste, brown chocolate, green matcha, white coconut and more. You can also choose from three sizes—a one-piece box, a two-cake blossom box, or a larger specially-designed premium box.

Where to find them: CentralWorld, 999/99 Rama I Rd., Pathum Wan

Conrad Bangkok

This hotel's multi-tier gift box is gorgeously decorated with red floral patterning and elegant folding fans. Inside, you'll find Conrad’s beloved East-meets-West flavors, from multigrain and white lotus paste with salted egg yolk, to classic golden custard and durian.

Where to find them: 87 Witthayu Rd.

Dusit Suites Hotel Ratchadamri

Presented in a cylindrical red and gold case that unfolds like a book, these mooncakes come in a range of flavors, including custard, durian, bird’s nest, lotus seed, black sesame, mixed nuts, honey date palm and truffle chestnut.

Where to find them: 3 Soi Mahadlekluang 3, Ratchadamri Rd.

Harrods

London's luxurious department store became world famous via its teas and pastries, so royal milk tea and rosebud mooncakes are a natural fit. Another mooncake unique to Harrods: blackcurrant jam with jujubees. Other flavors include: durian, white truffle custard, red egg yolk custard, and Georgian melon. Special flour provides a soft texture, and the cakes arrive in a glossy golden box, set with two drawers; like a minature dresser.

Where to find them: Siam Paragon; EmQuartier

Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok

Presented in a circular box in traditional shades of red and gold, these mooncakes come in four flavors: chocolate macadamia, durian with egg, pandan and coconut, 8 xian and custard.

Where to find them: 494 Ratchadamri Rd.

Mandarin Oriental

The packaging is quite extravagant. One is decroated with beige leather and golden tassels, while the other opens in a fan shape (like a clutch bag), and is patterned in striking red. Both are painted with traditional Chinese brush strokes, and set with a gilded decorative metal bottom. The handcrafted mooncakes include fillings like custard; flax and lotus seed with egg yolk; durian with egg yolk; and tangerine, spiced with eight-year-old dried tangerine peels.

Where to find them:  48 Oriental Avenue

The Peninsula

Ladies and gentlemen, we think we've found the winner. This stunning pink and yellow box designed by Thai artist Pichaya Osothcharoenpol is more than just a pretty face. Use the QR reader on your phone to witness the rabbits come to life in an innovative art experience, and open the box to see the pop-up dance before your eyes. The flaky, buttery mooncakes are freshly made and come in just one flavor (but it's the best one): egg custard. They're also totally organic, plus all proceeds go to fund scholarships for underprivileged students.

Where to find them: 333 Charoen Nakhon Rd.

Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel

These cakes come in four flavors—durian, lotus seed, black sesame and velvet custard. They are presented in "Imperial Red and Prestigious Gold" leather treasure boxes, and are available at Fei Ya restaurant.

Where to find them: Siam Paragon; EmQuartier

Starbucks Coffee

The coffee behemoth's collection is as varied as its drinks menu. It matches the Centara Grand with nine fillings. And yes, Starbucks makes a coffee mooncake (mocha, too). And like Harrods, Starbucks also creates tea-related cakes, including Hojicha green tea, green tea and red bean, and rose tea with berries. Rounding out the collection are: durian, multi-grain, sweet potato and almond, and chocolate mint. The gift set comes in a metal box with rabbits on the moon, backed by a starry night. A smaller set includes a canvas bag with a keychain.

Where to find them: every Starbucks branch
