It's been a great week for indie cinema
New theaters, exciting partnerships and at least three awesome screenings this very weekend. Hooray!
On Nov 6, we found ourselves on a breezy shophouse rooftop at Objectifs, catching an outdoor screening of local boy Sanif Olek's Malay-language feature Sayang Disayang. We thought, "This kind of thing doesn't happen nearly enough." Well, it looks like it may be starting to in the coming weeks and months.
For starters, the screening was part of a week-long series Watch Local, and you can still catch Lian Pek's Mad About English on Nov 7 and Colin Goh and Woo Yen Yen's Singapore Dreaming on Nov 8.
But that's not all that's hot and happening in the local film scene lately. We're about to get a brand new indie cinema, for example. Property redevelopment organization Pocket Projects is reviving the long defunct Golden Cinema at Golden Mile Tower and turning it into an indie theater called The Projector, thanks in part to Indiegogo crowdfunding efforts. The space is due to debut in December, as one of the venues for the Singapore International Film Festival.
And speaking of SGIFF, they've also partnered up with one of our favorite indie clubs, Canvas, to launch a Sunday monthly film series, Imagination Cinema, focused on glorious cinematography. The first screening is on Sunday, Nov 9, with Victric Thng's The Mole and Royston Tan's Hock Hiap Leong.
