With the recent submission of Sanif Olek’s Sayang Disayang for the Oscars, 2014 is looking to be a good year for local films. Here are three that we’re particularly excited about in the coming weeks.

Nightmare on Armenian Street

As part of The Substation's Moving Images program, 18 filmmakers will be coming together to produce the ultimate horror experience—an anthology of short films reimagining the various levels of hell commonly heard of in Chinese mythology. The screening will be a visceral experience featuring works by filmmakers like Nelson Yeo, Chris Yeo and Russel Morton bearing ominous titles such as Chamber of Scissors, Mountain of Knives and Pool of Blood.

WATCH LOCAL at Objectifs

In collaboration with the WATCH LOCAL campaign by the Singapore Film Commission, Objectifs is hosting a series of free rooftop screenings of Singaporean productions. Film buffs can enjoy 5 Singapore feature films each night with the highlight being Olek’s Sayang Disayang, Singapore’s entry to the Oscars in the Foreign Language Category. Other films include the award-winning Singapore Dreaming by Colin Goh and Woo Yen Yen, and Innocents by Wong Chen-His, who will also be present for a Q&A and DVD signing. Screenings in the last two years saw full houses each night, so we recommend booking early.

Banting (Opening in Cinemas on Oct 31)

In this Malay-Singaporean version of Whip It, a young woman who lives with her conservative Muslim parents secretly starts to follow her dream of becoming a wrestler. Naturally, mayhem ensues when her secret is threatened to be revealed. The film is the first full-length feature produced by Papahan Films, a young production company established by M. Raihan Halim and Edmund Lim. They’ve already garnered several awards for their TV dramas and telemovies, so here’s hoping that Banting proves to be another success.
