Brighten up your November with BAD Night Out
Week 4 brings rollicking jazz at The WoodShed, Korean tipples at SulBkk, plate smashing at Aesop's, sweeping river views at Seen and Thai-twist concoctions at Find the Photo Booth.
Now in its fourth week out of five, BK’s BAD Night Out is offering our readers the chance to try some of Bangkok's coolest bars for less. Through Nov 30, the cocktail-hopping event will continue its journey across 40 of the city’s top bars—gin joints, hideaways, rooftops and BAD Award-baiting cocktail dens—all offering specially curated menus with three drinks going for a flat rate of B800++.
Each week (Wed-Sat), the selection of bars will change, allowing our readers try some of the cool venues we write about in BK. The event coincides with our annual nightlife showdown: the BAD Awards (you can see last year’s winners here), happening at the end of November.
You’ll have to book in advance through our website. When you arrive at the venue, they will give each member of the booking party three tickets that can be spent on cocktails created for BAD Night Out—you can split between friends, or drink all three yourself (we’re not judging).
Bookings must be made at least 24 hours in advance.
Here are the bars and drinks you can look forward to this week.
The team that brought us #FindTheLockerRoom are back with another hard-to-find speakeasy. A project put together by Colin Chia (Nutmeg & Clove, Singapore), Hidetsugu Ueno (Bar High Five, Tokyo), Nick Wu (Bar Mood, Taipei), Ronnaporn “Neung” Kanivichaporn (Backstage Cocktail Bar, Bangkok) & Chennarong “Janz” Bhumichitr (Backstage Cocktail Bar, Bangkok) brings a touch of class to the ailing Sukhumvit Soi 11 party strip. Finding the bar is half the fun. As you head down the right-hand side of soi 11 coming from Sukhumvit Road, keep an eye out for a sports and games bar with a second floor accessible by a flight of stairs. This place has done an impressive job of getting all the small details right, whether it’s the inventively Thai cocktails, the suave setting or the thrill of the find.

Greek restaurant Aesop’s conjures an ouzo-fueled party atmosphere. This next-gen rebirth of a family-run restaurant from Sydney serves hearty Greek classics and potent cocktails in a hall made for big, boisterous gatherings. After dinner, the place transforms into a dance floor where guests are encouraged to hurl crockery, as is Greek tradition, to a soundtrack of “Zorba’s Dance.”

Asoke’s Bangkok Heightz in the Continent hotel is a 39-story-high under-cover lounge bar with a local flavor. Signature cocktails also play around with a lot of local flavors by leaning on Thai ingredients to develop punchy flavors. The place is cozy, the ceiling low and the vibe dark. There are some good cocktails at a fair price to be had.

Full-flavored Lao recipes and an old-school funk soundtrack combine at the noir-industrial dining room of Sanya Souvanna Phouma (Bed Supperclub, Maggie Choo’s, Sing Sing and Cactus) and fellow Lao business partner Saya Na Champassak’s latest venture. Dishes like kaipen, a starter of fried Mekong river-weed served with three types of spicy dips like jaew bong, are drawn from their upbringing, while cocktails lean on Asian flavors.

The finely-concocted story goes that Havana Social was once a hip hangout back in the Cuban capital's 1950s heyday, before falling into ruin after Fidel Castro seized power. Soho spent seven months renovating an old four-story shop-house to resemble something even older. The adventure starts with the carefully graffiti'd phone booth. Inside is Cuban pastiche done right, with shuttered windows, spare lighting and crumbling walls giving off a convincingly clandestine feel.

This elegant cocktail joint takes influence from former First Lady, ‘60s style icon and rumored gin-tonic lover Jackie Kennedy. It also comes from nightlife impresario Sanya Souvanna Phouma (Cactus, Sing Sing), who’s this time partnered with property developer Sansiri to take over the top floor of Siri House, a kind of hi-so members club where you don’t need membership. Designer Shelley Kwok’s projects have twice won B.A.D. Awards’ Best Design award, and here she once more conjures that intimate yet just-that-little-bit unattainable vibe.

Perched 37 floors above Silom, with river views to boot, this wine bistro combines well-executed French comfort food, chargrilled Aussie steaks and a long, long wine list into one sleek yet affordable package. The charcuterie and cheese platters also come highly recommended—just be sure to book well ahead for a spot on the terrace.

Avani Riverside Hotel's 26th-floor rooftop restaurant has transformed into the third global outpost of Portuguese celebrity chef Olivier Da Costa's Seen Restaurant and Bar, which can also be found in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Lisbon, Portugal. Like its predecessor, Attitude, the bar-restaurant shares the top floor with a swimming pool, which helps maximize the impressive river view. Inside you're greeted by a palate that’s big on black and gold, bold geometric motifs that give the place a ritzy ‘80s vibe and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out on the city.

Despite Bangkok’s obsession with all things Korean, there is surprisingly very little in the way of Korean nightlife. Here to change that, the partners of SulBkk have taken design cues from the respective Korean towns in different countries around the world. Surrounded by raw concrete walls with a mix of red bricks thrown in, the place exudes a grungy, industrial vibe. The bar is split into three zones, the bar area—our favorite—and two cozier seating areas on the sides.

Tucked inside rustic European restaurant Harvest is a bar with a jazz band and a rollicking menu of craft spirits and cocktails.True to its name, the WoodShed’s ambiance is dark and gloomily potent, a thing to be imbibed more than enjoyed. Seating’s divided between low tables, leather chairs and one nook in the corner that’s fit for a group. A few strings of dim fairy lights give the impression of candlelit outdoors, a look completed by the old, and still living, tree that’s smack in the middle of the bar. Pay attention to the assorted glassware collection—each piece was chosen meticulously by the owner.
