All the places to get your hands on the new Game of Thrones-inspired whiskies
For the perfect tipples to sip on when glued to the series finale
Fans of whisky and Game of Thrones now have the ultimate objects of desire. Sure to thoroughly satisfy your passions for both the spirit and the hit HBO series are a newly launched set of limited edition themed whiskies from Diageo.
You already know about the White Walker by Johnnie Walker, a blended Scotch they released late last year that’s inspired by the show’s frozen zombie army known as the White Walkers, and which is appropriately meant to be had freezer-chilled.
Now, Diageo in collab with HBO has released not just one, but a set of eight single malts that are each paired with one of the seven Houses of Westeros (familial kingdoms from the show) and the Night’s Watch (a military order that guards the realm of humanity against the White Walkers). It’s real geeky, but that’s why it’s so good.
They’ve put in plenty of effort to ensure the individual bottles share characteristics and traits with the associated houses. For instance, the House Targaryen bottling is filled with the Gold Reserve from Cardhu, a distillery that was first pioneered by women during a time when the industry was dominated by men, just like how Daenerys Targaryen came to lead her house in the series.
Each of the whiskies are also new, meaning they’ve been specially bottled by the different distilleries just for this collection—save for the House Baratheon bottling, which is filled with the Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old, though it’s still a great whisky either way.
But a standout has got to be the House Tyrell bottling, filled with a Clynelish Reserve, that exudes all the complex, light and floral notes (similar traits the elegant Tyrells share) that makes Clynelish whiskies so coveted. Collectors will also appreciate the completely blackened Night’s Watch bottling, filled with Oban Bay Reserve, that actually has the order’s famed oath inscribed on it so you can recite along as you watch the upcoming season in April.
As to how you can get yourself the whole set of eight ($1,188), they’re only retailing it at all 1855 The Bottle Shop stores and online at AsherBWS. You can’t buy them individually, but hey, it’s already a steal at that price considering the pedigree of the whiskies. If you’re travelling however, you’re in luck as DFS at Changi Airport does retail the bottles individually.
If you’d like a taste of the whiskies first, newly opened The Monarchy on Tras Street is the only bar in Singapore offering a tasting flight ($88) of all eight whiskies, while their stocks hold. Working out to only $11 per dram, it’s very good value even if you’re not into Game of Thrones.
With prices like that, you can be sure you won’t be needing to pay the Iron Price for it.
