Cinephiles, don't miss this year's European Union Film Festival
Full of new movies that have made it big in Europe, it includes both box office smashes and indie hits.
One of Singapore's biggest international film festivals, the 25th European Union Film Festival is back May 13-24 with a diverse lineup of the region's best new films.
From Austria and Finland to Latvia and the UK, there are some 30 films showing during the week-and-a-half long festival. The better- known films like Denmark's A Royal Affair (May 16), a drama, starring Mads Mikkelsen and Alicia Vikander, about Queen Caroline Mathilda's love affair and political aspirations while married to King Christian VII of Denmark, as well as France's The Connection (May 13 & 23), starring Jean Dujardin as a young magistrate who has been appointed to be a judge of an organized crime hearing.
Also on the roster are edgier films like Austria's The Silent Mountain (May 14) about a man who falls for an Italian beauty at his sister's wedding at the cusp of World War I, and the little-heard Latvian movie, Dream Team 1935 (May 16), based on a true story about the Latvian basketball team and their first European Basketball Championship in 1935.
And just when you think the UK contigent would have a movie you may have heard of, this year's entry comes in the form of Sunshine On Leith (May 22), a musical drama. Directed by Dexter Fletcher, it tells the tale of Davy and Ally, two people readjusting to life in Edinburgh after serving in Afghanistan.
