Where to meet your fellow feminists in Singapore
Fight the patriarchy with your new posse and have fun doing it.
There are lots of cool, thought-provoking and socially promising feminist-focused events happening in Singapore over the next couple weeks, from networking nights to cerebral panel discussions to casual book clubs. If you're looking to meet the rad feminist of your romantic/platonic/knitting circle dreams, try one of these.
Badass women are sure to flock to this one. Local theater biggies Edith Podesta and Tan Liting discuss two female tropes/slurs that have been reclaimed in popular culture. Part of the M1 Fringe Festival, the free event is beyond overbooked. But we plan to just stand outside until we snag a no-show's spot. You should, too.
When we watched Todd Haynes' Carol at the Projector opening week, the place was flooded with studious, serious women. Go join them and weep buckets over this 1950s lesbian love story starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. Make friends and discuss your views at The Great Escape afterwards. This is the last listed screening on The Projector site for the moment, but there are a few prior and they'll probably add more next week.
Co-organized by Asian queer women advocacy group Sayoni and open mic series Destination: Ink, this is the first in a series of socially-conscious open mic sessions taking place at Artistry between now and June. If you've got a piece that fits with this one's theme, Freedom to Information, drop the organizers a note. Or just go and listen.
