I-S Weekend: What's on this Nov 13-16
From a star-studded soccer match and a kitchen-full of Michelin-starred chefs to a fascinating exhibition revealing the genius of Leonardo Da Vinci there's plenty to keep you busy this weekend.
One of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies, and perhaps most accesible plays, tells of the marriage of the Duke of Athens Theseus to the Queen of the Amazons Hippolyta. The follies of human love are explored and there's plenty of meddling fairies and donkeys thrown in for comic effect. Directed by The Globe artistic director Dominic Dromgoole, this dreamlike interpretation features Renaissance costumes and staging.
Curated by indie filmmaker Lynn Lee, the festival returns with a series of local and international films and documentaries focused around the theme of freedom. This year’s highlights include shorts like Anur Nak Sekolah, a Malaysian film about a child suffering from cerebal palsy and her claim to formal eduction and full-length features such as WUKAN: Flame of Democracy, a film centered around a Chinese village’s struggle for democratic elections.
Two exhibitions featuring different mediums are currently showing at the ArtScience Museum. Get up close and personal with artistic and scientific great Leonardo Da Vinci in Da Vinci: Shaping the Future, in this exhibition which focuses on his all-important personal notebook, the Codex Atlanticus. Meanwhile, photography exhibition An Ocean of Possibilities features over 200 photographs by 33 artists from 17 countries revolving around issues of social developments and challenging the status quo.
Four Michelin-starred chefs cook up their four distinct cuisines at this pop-up dining event at the F1 Pit Building. Expect names like Mads Refslund of Noma, Nathan Outlaw of Restaurant Nathan Outlaw and Rolf Fliegauf of Ristorante ECCO to serve a series of Champagne brunches and gastronomic degustation dinners.
Swedish DJ-producer Otto Knows rose to fame after catching the attention of Sebastian Ingrosso, one-third of Swedish House Mafia. He debuted alongside Avicii and Oliver Ingrosso on dance tune “iTrack” and now has a slew of infectious dance anthems like first single “Million Voices” and “Parachute” under his belt.
Masters Football Asia and Castlewood Group bring together former Liverpool legends like Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, Emile Heskey and Ian Rush to play an 11-a-side match against top local names like Fandi Ahmad, Malek Awab, Nazri Nasir and Alexander Duric at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
One of rock music’s most influential guitarists plays at a one night-only performance showcasing his unmistakable sound and technical skills. With multiple Grammy nominations, he’s played (and taught)greats like Steve Vai and Metallica’s Kirk Hammet and toured with rock legends Deep Purple.
