Fun markets to hit up in Singapore this September and October
For when you need a break from the malls.
Singapore loves markets, and as always, there's close to a dozen on the calendar in the coming weeks. From green living to design-centric knick-knacks, here's where to go and what to buy.
Homegrown designers will throng at this market selling quirky crafts at Millenia Walk. There are brands like Euphoramics who'll be there with their handmade ceramic goods (and taking customized orders for Christmas), Operation Overhaul who specializes in cute knick-knacks like pouches, The honey&gazelle Design Studio with unique art prints and stationery, and more. There's even a mini food tour to join in.
Green Living is returning to Marina Bay Sands Convention Center for its second run, with more eco-lifestyle activities, workshops and eco-friendly products covering smart mobility, health and wellness, urban farming and more. There will also be workshops and seminars if you want to get your green-geek on. Oh, and admission is free.
This monthly market takes place at Capitol Piazza, and like most markets, it's all about the local start-ups, brands and designers. Take a walk around the Maker’s Market at the Outdoor Plaza of the mall and have a look at the selection of handcrafted jewelry, accessories, natural beauty products and more from names like 13rushes, Fayyterrarium, Avoavoshake, Mint&Ordinary and more.
One of your last chances to hang out at Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, the Fantastic Thai Market is bringing together over 100 vendors selling (presumably Thai) food and merchandise, live bands and food trucks by Kerbside Gourmet and Kombi Rocks, who specialize in food and restoring vintage cars and vans.
Held in one of Suntec City’s convention halls, the Public Garden Consumer Trade Show is organizers’ largest event to date, featuring some great independent labels and brands in Southeast Asia, such as Jakarta-based metal smithing workshop and studio that creates contemporary jewelry, a showcase of paper goods by Singapore-based Paper Cranes and ShelShel, the latter specializing in bags, pouches and clothes and more.
Red Dot Design Museum hosts the monthly MAAD market where you can check out the community of artists, designers, crafters and brand owners showcasing their goods, original artworks and fashion creatives. Details on the participating brands are still in the works, but this edition will see multidisciplinary artist Andy Yang curates this special segment that will feature some homegrown musicians performing their original music.
This “conscious festival” held at Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore will be the hub of inspiring talks from thought leaders and change-makers in fields like ethical fashion, wellness and social justice. There’ll also be interactive workshops that will give you tips on urban farming, yoga and building living gardens, as well as a marketplace with 50 mindful brands such as Diadem Candles whose products use natural soy wax and lead-free cotton or wooden wicks; FrankSkincare, a 100% organic luxury skincare line with small batches of products, and more. The day ends with a pool party.
