8 free events to head to in the last days of January
We promise: no cover charge.
We've all been there—it's the end of the month and you don't have very much in the bank. But fear not, there are lots of free and fun events to tide you over. There's a tour of Bukit Brown, an indie gig and, of course, a poetry-slam type competition about human rights.
ArtScience Late: Resonance (Jan 28)
Free evening shenanigans are back at the ArtScience Museum, this time with artist Randolph Arriola, who will explore the theme of multiverses through "a sweeping sonic journey" involving live looping and other fun stuff. 8pm
Allies Night (Jan 28)
Hosted by the Marsh and McLennan Companies, Allies Night at The Exchange is the monthly thing to be at, if you want to meet like-minded LGBTQ professionals. The first 50 guests get a free house pour, wine, spirit, San Miguel, or even a soft drink, if you're the boring sort. Chill out at the building's lower dining area. 6pm.
Book Club: "The Blood of Flowers" (Jan 28)
Singapore Committee for UN Women's bi-monthly book club is here again, this time, to discuss "The Blood of Flowers," in which a 14-year-old girl living in 17th century Iran uses her gift as a rug designer to overcome difficulties in life. Head to the Geylang East Public Library for this one. 7-8:30pm.

Bukit Brown: Tombs of Hills 2 and 5 (Jan 30)
While demolishment work has started, the Brownies are still giving tours, this time, to the Tombs of Hills 2 and 5, where they aren't gone to as much. The tour is headed by Tay Koh Yat, dubbed "the Chinese Society Stalwart", and he'll show you some cool graves, with one of a scenes from the Chinese epic, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and the shed of a cemetery caretaker. 9am-12pm
Insider Series: Playing with/in Space (Jan 30)
If you've always wondered what goes on behind a stage production, you'll get to hear it from the people who work backstage. Multimedia designers Yusri 'Shaggy' Sapari, Brian Gothong Tan and Daniel Primo, as well as Lighting designer Lim Woan Wen, and sound artist Darren Ng talk about how they got into their respective gigs, what they do when they are given a project, and showing you how they make the cool light and sound effects you see on stage.
All Things New (Jan 30)
If you didn't get your act together in time for Laneway, you can still catch local band The Madhatter Project who are known for their pianos and synth-y sounds (kind of like the local version of The Dresden Dolls). There's also Lew, who is known for his acoustic, folksy tunes, and The Neptune Waves, who, judging from their demo, produce lullaby-like, zen(ish) music.
Yoga by the Beach (Jan 31)
Yoga Sumudra is organizing a free yoga class at East Coast Park's Area C at the Parkland Green near Starbucks, so grab your yoga mat, zen out, and feel the good vibes. The best part? Fruit and healthy snacks are provided. 9-10:15am
Human Writes (Jan 31)
Go forth and get fired up at this poetry competition, Human Writes, where well-known and emerging spoken word poets tackle the theme of Freedom to Information. Head down to Artistry to cheer on your favorite-to-win, with the pot going at $250.
