Are bars the new clubs?

It's been a good time for small party series in Singapore, with several old ones making a return and several new ones having their inaugural shindigs. From jungle and drum and bass to reggae, if you're taking a break from big-time clubbing, check out these cozy little events happening in August.

Tiko Disco: The Return

Taking "your dad's record collection" as inspiration, the Tiko Disco party series has popped up again with DJs KiDG and Kurt Koh Beng, happening tonight at Koi on Haji Lane. Expect Asian funk, disco and some tea dance-worthy material. Aug 12

The Upsidedown

Haji Lane fans get a one-two punch of the teeny but beloved, mostly-outdoorsy Koi when it comes right back the next night with DJs Marvin Gold and My Hero play disco and soul. Aug 13

Icicle

It's going to be a big, sweaty night of drum and bass, dubstep and a whole lot else at Canvas with Dutch electro producer Icicle headlining a lengthy list of DJs, including Canvas's own DJ Roy, Revision Music's Nez and a few others. It's $30 (with a drink) to get in, but order ahead and it's a sweet $22. Aug 13

Tropical Temple: Adelante Edition

Fans of this Afro Caribbean and Latin dance party series and of founding DJ Bhayology in particular should take note. The man is going on hiatus, and this is your last chance to catch him in action. The party has traveled to Kult Kafe in recent weeks, but we're excited to see it back in the close quarters of Blu Jaz. Aug 19

Sub City

Revision Music is putting together a big, daytime to nighttime, mostly outdoor d&b dance party on the Kult Kafe premises. Drum and bass fans and junglists have been talking about this one for a while, so expect a fun turnout and a laidback vibe. Visiting DJs Diphasic and 90s veteran Andy Vortex will spin alongside the likes of Zul, Senja and Ramesh. No cover. Aug 20

Kawara Reggae Dancehall in di Air

Year-old reggae and dub collective Lion Steppaz Sound is bringing its new dancehall party series to The Great Escape. There will be a half dozen selectas from Singapore, Japan and France, and they've promised cool visual projections to go with the music. It's free to get in and a glass of wine starts at $8. Aug 27
