4 things you didn't know about Serangoon Gardens' coolest rooftop*
Get together with friends, pop-up cocktail bars, alfresco concerts and a bunch of neighborhood heritage
[Sponsored] The leafy rooftop above myVillage in Serangoon Gardens is a great place to get together with friends and family. It's also got tons of rooftop events that are well worth the outing—from movie screenings to concerts to pop-up cocktail bars. Here are four reasons to head up there.
Gentle Bones
1. It's got a huge concert in July
If you liked Getai Electronica and Getai Ethnica over at People's Park Complex, gather up your friends and check out the show happening at the myVillage rooftop on Jul 4. A Rooftop Affair brings together soulful singer-songwriter Gentle Bones, Shigga Shay and his Hokkien-inflected raps and YouTube musical celebrities Us The Duo for a night of open-air magic. All you have to do is spend $90 at myVillage's various shops and F&B outlets to redeem your ticket. It shouldn't be too hard, with shopping options like funky magazine shop Allscript, cool Swedish streetwear label WESC and many others.
2. You can get a stiff heritage cocktail
At the end of a hard week, relax with friends over rooftop drinks at myVillage, and take in views of the neighborhood. Beloved Boat Quay cocktail bar Ah Sam Cold Drink Stall has a roving pop-up cart now, and one of the places where it parks is at this rooftop. Every Friday and Saturday from 6pm till midnight, they shake up classics and specials. One special is a nod to the history of the neighborhood. The Paramount (served in a pineapple) pays homage to the pineapple drink stall at the old Paramount Theatre that used to be popular in Serangoon Gardens.
3. There are great food options downstairs
Other than the rooftop and great shopping options, myVillage is home to some solid food and drink. The obvious highlight is the Willin Low (of Wild Rocked fame) outpost, Relish Gardens, which specializes in burgers with patties like chicken satay, char siew pork and classic beef. There's also coffee and desserts at Instagram-worthy cafe Little Wimbly Lu, perfectly crisp Australian-style pizzas from Crust (which offers a whopping eight options for base sauces) pizza, ice-cream from Udders and a slew of other options.
4. There are movies under the stars
In the 60s, the myVillage site used to be home to Paramount Theatre, a cinema where people went to watch popular movies with their friends, dates and families. The ritual continues even now, with the annual Filmhouse Festival, which is hugely popular with Serangoon Garden regulars. As night falls, the rooftop becomes an open air cinema that screens wholesome, contemporary hits for all ages. The Filmhouse Festival takes place in March every year and involves food, drink, fringe activities and pretty good giveaways.
