Local films, themed dinners, markets, concerts and the return of Game of Thrones.

April is set to be a huge month of cool events from food festivals like the World Gourmet Summit to theatrical dinners and indie film screenings. Plan your month with this list of things to do.

THEATER

It’s theater season and this year, 50 of Singapore’s best English-language plays are getting re-staged at The Studios: FiftyFive will run as full-length productions and 45 as dramatized readings. More hereApr 2-May 10.  

ART

Feast your eyes on paintings and sculptures that are inspired by iconic celebrities who are now dead at Dead Celebrities. Apr 2-30.

FILM

Grab your picnic mats and head for the hills (well, Dempsey Hill to be exact) for Movies Under The StarsThere’ll be live music by local band The Lost Box and an outdoor film screening featuring local short films like Perfect Girl and Ying & Summer. Plus, there’s free popcorn and kacang puteh. Apr 2.

WORKSHOP

The Silkscreen Printing Workshop will take you through the basics of designing, creating and printing. Plus, try your hand at designing your own tote bag and take it home, too. Apr 4.

TV

It's the end of an eraget your fix of the final few episodes of Mad Men, which starts today on FX Asia, StarHub TV Ch 507. Apr 5.

EAT

The star-studded foodie festival World Gourmet Summit is back with more dinners, guest chefs and workshops. Big names include the Roca brothers from three Michelin-starred El Celler de can Roca as well as Christophe Muller of L'Aubgerge Du Pont de Collonges. Apr 6-May 3.

COMEDY

Love Canadian funnyman Russell Peters? Get a taste of his witty jabs at culture and family backgrounds first hand. Hurry though, there are only three shows and tickets are selling out fast. Apr 6-8.


The Faulty Towers Dining Experience

THEATER

Eat, drink and laugh-out-loud at this two-hour Faulty Towers The Dining Experience. With only a small portion scripted, you know there’ll be plenty of knee-smacking laughter involved. Apr 9-12.

DRINK

Celebrate Manhattan's first anniversary with a double bill of bartenders. Though dear Ricky Paiva has moved on, there's Alex Kratena from the world's best bar Artesian, as well as Becherovka's brand ambassador, George Nemec. Apr 10.

SPORT

The Music Run finally makes its way to Singapore with a 5km un-timed and non-competitive run. With five 1km music zones, each zone blasts out a different genre of music. Apr 10.

FILM

The Singapore Art Museum’s Southeast Asian Film Festival is back for its fifth editiondon't miss opportunities to catch rare documentaries and indie films from around the region at this almost month-long affair. Some screenings have already sold out, so hurry. Apr 10-May 3.

FASHION

Rub shoulders with the trendy crowd and soak up the latest fashion trends as Orchard Road gets transformed into a massive catwalk that will see some 150 models strutting their stuff at Samsung Fashion Steps Out @ Orchard Road. Apr 11.

NIGHTLIFE

Belgian DJ Kolombo plays a set of house and disco beats at Smack My Beach Up, the pre-party of Tanjong Beach Club's famed Full Steam Ahead parties. Apr 12. 

TV

There's no better time to binge watch when Season 4 of Game of Thrones premieres on HBO StarHub TV Ch 601 on April 13 at 9pm. That's followed by the Season 3 premier of Veep at 10:30pm. Apr 13.


A Tapestry of Sacred Music

FESTIVALS

Esplanade's annual music festival A Tapestry of Sacred Music showcases traditional sacred music from countries like Syria, South Africa and Japan. There's even a classical opera that incorporates Indian instruments. Apr 16-19.

DESIGN

Check out 14 beautiful photographs of colored lights printed onto fabric at The Sew-Out Show. It's a joint effort between well-known photographer Kevin Ou and local design firm The General Co., who will create tote bags and bow-ties out of sections of the fabrics chosen by you. Apr 16-Jun 8.

FILM

We didn't exactly love it, but were still enormously entertained by local badboy director Ken Kwek's first feature film Unlucky Plaza, the opening film of last year's Singapore International Film Festival. You'll remember that his last film was banned by the MDA, so it's especially exciting that this hostage thriller set in Singapore gets a general release at Shaw cinemas islandwide. ART

The spring edition of the Affordable Art Fair is back with more artworks below $10,000. This time, there are also activities like live art demonstrations and workshops including sculpture-making, watercolor and photography. Apr 17-19.

NIGHTLIFE

Italian techno maestro Joseph Capriati has established himself as a mainstay in the DJ world with hits like "Fratello" and "Solar System". It's no wonder he's been crowned the best DJ for techno music, too. Apr 17.

SHOPPING

The second edition of The Big Ohm Theory, a health- and sustainability-centric market centers around the theme of sanctuary in a busy city. There are lots of local vendors, as well as workshops on floral arrangement, art and even Reiki. Apr 18-19.


Take Two

MUSIC

Local indie pop-rock quintet Take Two launch their EP, PAIRS with a concert playing singles like "In Your Arms" and their hit song "Always Been Right Here", which shot to #5 on the Singapore iTunes chart. Apr 18.

COMEDY

One of our favorite and most established comedians, Kumar, pokes fun at Singapore's history as a swampy island in Kumar Stands Up For Singapore. Apr 22-26.

FILM

Frank Pavich directs Jodorowsky's Dune, a 90-minute documentary about Jodorowsky's high-budget failure, Dune and how it inspired tons of other films like Star Wars. Apr 23.

CONCERT

Chart-topping singer Meghan Trainor comes to Singapore where she'll be singing hits like "All About That Bass" and "Lips are Moving". Apr 23.

SHOPPING

The F1 Pit building hosts another edition of Boutiques at the Pit Building with over 120 labels spanning jewelry, lifestyle products and home decor. There's also a lounge with food from Violet Oon's Kitchen. Apr 25.

EAT

Here’s one for all the Game of Thrones (GoT) fans. The Requiem for Red Viper lets you mingle with fellow die-hard fans for a final farewell to Oberyn Martell aka The Red Viper over a six-course GoT-inspired dinner. Apr 25.


National Theatre Live

THEATER

There's no need to travel to London with National Theatre Live's  pre-recorded screenings of stage productions like King Lear, A Streetcar Named Desire and War Horse. Starts Apr 30.

ART

Local artist Allison M. Low debuts solo exhibition Oddlings with 20 haunting drawings revolving around emotional trauma and loneliness. Starts Apr 30.

FILM

Singapore's first-ever sex comedy (allegedly), Rubbers, hits the theaters today. It's a laugh-out-loud raunchy Mandarin-language film revolving around an aging couple trying to rekindle the spark, a sexy plumber, a sad sexless beauty and a talking condom. Read our review here.
