Lots of F1 afterparties, films and new bar and restaurant openings to check out.

Rejoice! This week’s a short one, and it’s particularly exciting because we’re gearing up for the exciting F1 Singapore Grand Prix. But to fill your days before you head to all the parties this weekend, there are a number of new bars that have opened up you might want to check out before they get too crowded, films to watch and markets to go to.

Alchemist Beer Lab

NEW PLACE
The weekend isn’t over so grab a few beers at Asia’s first and only infusion beer lab, Alchemist Beer Lab, which is glamorously located at the swanky new building on South Beach. 

MARKET
One of your last chances to hang out at Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, the Fantastic Thai Market is bringing together over 100 vendors selling (presumably Thai) food and merchandise, live bands and food trucks by Kerbside Gourmet and Kombi Rocks. Sep 12

FESTIVAL
Music Matters Live is now in its 11th year. Look out for a wide range of music, with highlights such as The Veronicas, an Australian pop punk band fronted by identical twins; electronic indie pop band from Israel, Garden City Movement; New Zealand’s R&B songstress, Aaradhna; and more. Sep 12-15

EXHIBITION
There's an exhibition of Singaporean comics from the turbulent days under British rule to modern times at the National Library, with books, artifacts and original art by Benjamin Chee, Cheah Sinann, Troy Chin and more. Through Sep 30

FESTIVAL
As we gear up for the season of all things art—from dance productions, night festivals and theatre work—here’s another one to add to your list. The Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF) returns for its fifth year to celebrate this widely accessible form of art. Through Nov 13

Yuck

NEW PLACE
If it’s been a brutal re-entry into the working week, have a post-office drink at the new Louisiana-themed whisky bar, Bourbon Street. Sep 13

CONCERT
Yuck recorded their first studio album in a house belonging to a band member's parents. They've been going strong ever since, touring with biggies like Modest Mouse, Tame Impala and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Tickets are $55 from Peatix. Sep 13

THEATRE
Eve Ensler's monologue-driven play The Vagina Monologues is back in Singapore. Hosted by sexual awareness organization Lila Sutra, the format of this award-winning play sees real women with no acting experience talking about issues such as misogyny, female genital mutilation, slut shaming and more. Sep 13

FILM
Two intriguing films are playing today at The Projector. South Korean documentary The Lovers and the Despot, which tells the strange but true story of the North Korean abduction of 1970s director Shin Sang-ok and glamour babe Chol Eun-hee, and Woody Allen’s new Jazz Age dramedy Cafe Society, starring Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg. Sep 13-14

EXHIBITION
Photojournalist Wong Maye-E showcases some of her photographs taken in North Korea. Titled "North of the DMZ", the exhibition will see images of impeccable state parades, citizens going about their daily lives and more. Sep 13-Oct 15

NEW PLACE
You’re still a few days shy of the weekend, but hang in there at the brand new Super Loco at Customs House, with its upscale Mexican food, mezcalitas and waterfront views. Sep 14

PARTY
Six-day party Sky Grand Prix is back for another installment at Empire on the 45th floor of Singapore Land Tower, promising views of six turns of the race route. Tickets here. Sep 14-18

THEATRE
Hot Chocolate Theatre presents a local interpretation of The Man Who by Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne, a stage performance that's been lauded by the New York Times as "...one of the most magically effective explorations of the mind (also possibly the soul) ever to be attempted on the stage...". Sep 14-18

Assorted treats from Pyxiemoss Restaurant and Bar

NEW PLACE
A modern European restaurant on North Canal Road, Pyxiemoss is the new permanent home of often-seen food consultant and chef Tim Ross-Watson, a bare-bones operation specializing in small sharing plates that give comfort food a gastronomy flourish. Sep 15

ART
BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer) is a one-night exhibition of moving light, video art and sound performance that's become a movement of sorts around the world. Kult Kafe is hosting Singapore’s own edition, so head down for a look, or bring your own projections. Sep 15

PARTY
You can’t can’t go wrong with Ce La Vi, which provides a beautiful view of the city skyline. At 200 meters up, and being quite a distance from the race track itself, you’ll get a good unobstructed view of the 5km circuit. Also, they’ll be providing all-day entertainment from noon till 6am as part of their Night Race Week. Sep 15-18

 

Friday, Sep 16

NEW PLACE
Much like its first outlet in Kampong Glam, you can indulge in a variety of bar bites and mains at 13% Gastro Wine Bar (Killiney Road) such as the Iberico pizza ($22), and Geoffrey Weckx's Belgium fries ($8) and choose affordable wines from Australia, France, Italy and Spain, such as the Dominique Portet ($97) and Domaine De Cambes ($140). Sep 16

SPORT
Now in its ninth year, Formula 1 Singapore Airline Singapore Grand Prix is back with more roaring engines, big-name performers and uber-glam huge parties. Sep 16-18

CONCERT
Related to F1, this year’s diverse line-up of concerts for the Off-track segment include Halsey and Imagine Dragons, who’ll be on the same bill as huge international headliners Kylie Minogue, Queen + Adam Lambert, Bastille, KC and the Sunshine Band and Pentatonix. Tickets here. Sep 16-18

PARTY
Another F1 party you might wanna check out is is Bang Bang's Race Weekend party, only because Sasha Grey, who’s known as one of the most notorious adult film stars in the industry, will be on turntable duty for the night. $45 cover charge. Sep 16

PARTY
Put your love for pool parties and F1 together at SO Sofitel Singapore’s Skyline Sessions, where you can lounge in the pool, sip on cocktails and dance night away after watching the races on their TVs and large projector. Sep 16

PARTY
For three days, Altimate’s hosting its annual Circuit Party in association with Johnnie Walker, a day-to-night Farmer’s Market at Stellar and the Williams Martini Racing Party at 1-Altitude. Sep 16-18

PARTY
A great place to have a bird's eye view of the race is at New Asia, perched on the 71st floor of Swissotel The Stamford. They’ll be holding a string of F1 parties, featuring one of the best party MCs in the world, Big Ali on the first night, Dutch electronic dance music duo NEW_ID on the second night and New Asia’s resident DJ Doze on race day. Sep 16-18

PARTY
Check out the display of luxury super cars, artworks by six of the world's top artists and dance to the music provided by Ce La Vi resident DJ Stephen Day at the Singapore Arts Circuit. Sep 16-18

PARTY
Sophie Ellis-Bextor is performing at the Podium Lounge, where F1 drivers, celebrities, supermodels and the occasional mortal conglomerate to have a good time. Who knows, you could even rub shoulders with the likes of Sebastian Vettel. Sep 16-19

PARTY
Take a break from the F1 madness and head over to Kult Gallery, where more than 20 artists will turn the space into a record store reminiscent of the 1982 American coming-of-age film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Remixed album art, deconstructed vinyl and installations inspired by David Bowie will add to the 80s vibe. Sep 16-Oct 31
