After being rescheduled from November, the annual Bangkok Theatre Festival is finally opening this weekend (it runs Feb 18-Mar 4) at Santichaiprakarn Park and restaurants in the surrounding area. “This year is our 10th anniversary, where we want to trace back and tell the story from our beginning until now, like pressing the fast forward function in the video player,” says Naitan Tanachon, the project’s art director. The program is composed of 55 shows from 45 independent stage groups, with highlights that include the very traditional Thai dance Prawai Kiey Nang Wanthong, performed by the Banglampoo Classical Music and Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Arts, contemporary Thai dance The Return of Wanthong, performed by the Anatta Theatre Troupe; Yim Soo Flood from the Babymime group; Tiny box from the Makhampom group; and three international shows, including Ten years old from Shinehouse Theatre (Taiwan); Of dream from Kabuki la (featuring Japanese expats); and Alyslum from the Tonoh Theatre Shop (Malaysia).
